I'm currently seeing a specialist who believes I will benefit from having a ADOS assessment. I have had a WAIS test done around 5 years ago by different specialist which proved positive for autism spectrum disorder. I was able to use the WAIS results to get accommodations in college and explain my situation to other specialists. I have also had two other assessments done for ADHD in the past, which were years apart. The first one proved positive and the second one negative.
The ADOS assessment will cost approximately $3,400.00. The specialist believes this test will provide him with a better guideline to help me and it will give me a better understanding of my weaknesses. He also said this test will "prove once and for all if I have ADHD and autism"...of course there were similar claims made by the other specialists about their testing too.
I am still unsure if I want to pursue this assessment as the tests as I have done in the past which also cost around the same. I have provided him with the results for all of these assessments I have done. I also had a consultation appointment where we have gone over my concerns and autistic characteristics-a consultation I had to pay over $200 for. I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who can explain the difference between the WAIS and ADOS test and if the ADOS will actually provide me with a better understanding of myself. It would also be greatly appreciated if anyone who took the ADOS is willing to share anything about their experience and if the cost seems appropriate.
