I have a tendency to think most NT kids my age think poorly of me. I feel like they think I'm crazy or weird and that I constantly have to prove myself to society. By prove myself, I mean prove myself to be different (in a better way) from what they expect.

Do you feel like you constantly have to prove yourself?

Yes, I believe I have to prove myself, not to others necessarily, but to myself. I need to prove I can accomplish certain things.

I used to. It was as if I had "Cassandra's Curse", where the more factual I was, the less I was believed.

Now it's more satisfying to give a warning, be ignored, wait for the inevitable failure, and then say "I told you so."

Most everybody has to prove themselves to a whole lot of other people and most often to a lot of people not to starve to death. If you are poor or disabled you have to prove that to others to receive benefits. There are people who can live like a hermit and never need assistance but that is pretty rare today.

Yes but I get the feeling even if I did it perfectly (which I did not do), idiots would still. View me the same way

Thinking this way makes you a slave to other people...
To use someone else's opinion of you creates a false starting point even if your intention is to be different from them......<shrug>

And the benefit is increased confidence...

Constantly. I do not get excited over it anymore. I just say what I think, and let it happen. My reaction is usually along the lines of that is what I said would happen, but I am just a dumb mechanic what do I know.

As a young person I felt like this often. It felt like my parents and had already made up their minds about my limited potential in life. I can't really blame them though. Given my early childhood track record it kind of made sense.

Now that I have a PhD people don't really treat me that way. People still think I'm weird, but in a high-potential, socially acceptable way.

I felt like a loser & the weakest link within society my whole life. I never really felt a need to prove myself otherwise cuz I KNOW it to be true. However I find others tend not to take me seriously in the few ways/times/situations/instances where I do know more or better than someone else. I have to fight to get my point across without being dismissed immediately cuz I'm ret*d. I guess it's their problem if they screw themselves over due to not considering anything I say. I wish I could contribute more thou.

I absolutely do, people have the tendency to not believe me when I try to explain my difficulties to them and insist that I'm simply not trying hard enough, don't care, and/or just don't want to do things, so I always feel like I have to prove that I'm not just a lazy layabout who doesn't do anything she doesn't like. But then I just get the same stuff again, usually being told that my best (which people don't believe is my best) isn't good enough :(

Yes, I still feel the need to prove myself.
It's a drive that's been beneficial to my life, for the most part, but you have to watch out for burn-out.
It's good to learn to compensate for one's difficulties. It becomes bad when one over-compensates, at the expense of health and sanity.

Not a feeling, but a fact.
