I've always now and then had a sensation in my teeth where it felt like they were itching. The only one who seemed to believe me was my mother would told me it was probably my gums and that I just needed to brush more often. The only thing that helped relieve the itchy sensation was biting down as hard as I could on something hard. The silicone stim toys meant for autistic children and teething infants were always too soft for me and I would chew right through them within seconds. The only thing that seemed to help was a dog toy meant for pit bulls and aggressive chewers. My mom told me I was going to mess up my jaws. The last dentist I went too told me I was wearing away the enamel on my teeth. I didn't tell them I grind my teeth and chew on hard things. I didn't even tell them about the "itching". They thought I did it at night and tried to get me to buy a $600 mouth guard and suggested I get one at the sporting goods store. Right.... Like I would seriously be able to sleep with that in my mouth.

And if you want me to stop the chewing and grinding, why don't you do something about the itching I tell you about even if it means pulling the one tooth that itches the most. You want to do all these other procedures. A lot of dentists like to take advantage of people on government based insurance plans and do root canals that would only cause me even more pain.

Doesn't sound strange to me. I chew gum really often. To people commenting on this, I always reply That chewing gum are 'my cigarettes' (I don't smoke).
Although it isn't an itching sensation in my case, I would describe it like restless legs, but with your jaw/teeth/tongue.
If you like to bite down hard, have you tried licorice roots?
Certain types of chewinggum and hard foods like carrots also do the trick for me!
