The methods that are currently being used to do this are only capable of making contact with a civilization that is much more advanced than us. It seems probable that the reason we haven’t made contact is that any civilization at such an advanced level would not be interested in contacting us.

We will all go home when our missions on Earth are complete

What do you think your own mission is?

Are you speaking figuratively? After all, this is Wrong Planet, and you could be referring to finding people you feel comfortable with, rather than feeling like you are on the wrong planet.

Re. literal extraterrestrials:
Have you researched SETI? How about the possibility of (microbial) life on Mars or Titan? At this point, most scientists are of the opinion that we are far more likely to find bacteria-like organisms than intelligent life; but there are always the long shots (like SETI) of finding evidence that there's somebody else out there. So far? Nothing conclusive, even when it comes to microbes.

"If" a race is watching us they would know better then to involve them selves, we are still a waring race.
they most likely would not want to make contact until we can become a lasting world of one peoples.

We don't have to dissolve national borders to have peace; borders don't cause war (when's the last time you saw New Yorkers marching against Minnesota, for example? Or even Canada against the US?) Fighting may just be part of human nature; but it could be possible to reduce it greatly if we had better communication and understanding of each other. Actually, we're moving towards that right now, with the Internet--you can have a civil conversation with someone your country's at war with, if both of you are willing to talk and listen. The only question left is what comes first--Destroying each other with increased weapons technology; or understanding each other through better communications technology?

Actually I have a deep love for mysticism and feel close to it in various ways, as it always corresponds with science. There are actually many elements that are responsible for life, and they are very abundant in the universe. So it would be rediculous to think this is an impossible task. Not to mention the human brain is a very powerful thing, even for us aspies . So, without going into too many details and boring everyone lol, yes, I certainly believe this is quite possible.

It's possible ... but only if there really are any extraterrestrial intelligences. Radio would be the best method, as the vacuum of space would provide a barrier to biological contamination.

Currently, there is no evidence of any extraterrestrial civilisations of a sufficient technological level to allow them to communicate with us, and there is no evidence at all that Earth has been visited by extra-terrestrial beings.

ok let's try this again (had a wonderful answer, and my Internet connection went out...grrr...;)

Radio (and any other electromagnetic emanation) has to obey the Inverse Square law, which relates distance and signal strength. Because of background radiation, any signal from Earth fades out by the time it passes Pluto (heard this on an NPR segment on the question). Exceptions are the 21cm band; where hydrogen causes a silent 'gap' in all that noise out there. Scientists are looking there for examples.

We have detected nearly 150 planets (or more, I lost count) around nearby stars. Most are Jovian (Jupiter-sized) or even larger. Only a few are the 'right' distance to support life, and they're pretty big.

I have been told that Earth's gravity well is such that only hydrogen-oxygen fueled craft create sufficient velocity to escape. If our world was much bigger, we couldn't leave it until something with more kick (nuclear?) came along. So the chances of someone from one of these detected worlds getting out there might be pretty slim.

But with 100 Billion (US) stars in our own galaxy, and billions of Galaxies, the sheer number of stars out there would dictate that we weren't unique.

In fact, I've often wondered; why is it so important to prove that we are alone in the Universe?

biblically speaking (not meaning to offend anyone who believes differently), there ARE other intellegent beings in the universe, who were created by God, like us. however, they are all perfect and unfallen beings who would in no way want to come to our crummy world. however, since our world, as the only fallen planet, is the center of the great controversy between good and evil, all those other beings on other worlds have their eyes turned towards us, watching with baited breath to see how everything will play out. :D

Except there is no such thing as true "good" or "evil". One thing I might view as "evil", you would view as "good". Good and evil things are strictly opinion based, unless of course you have a god to tell you what to think. They are all perfect? They all started out as a carbon or sulphur etc element and evolved into perfect beings? Well that sure is astonishing, astronomical to be exact. W/e, mocking that stuff bores me anyway lol

that's why i said i didn't want to offend anyone who believes differently.

good vs. evil, being more specifically the struggle between God and Satan in regards to our eternal future.

and i said "created by God" as in, creationism, not evolution.

because i was respectful enough to say i wasn't trying to offend anyone who believes differently, you should be respectful enough not to mock my beliefs. i never said you had to believe what i do. i was just saying what i believed. :(
