You're right, I didn't question the OP's claim that his list included all "commonly used" abbreviations. Guess I gave OP a priori privilege.

Acronyms commonly used by me:

I rarely use abreviations.

A recent thread was entitled "What are your SI's?".

And the poster went on to talk about "SI"s in her original post without explaining what an SI is.

We all had to play a guessing game, to figure out that it mean "special interests".

Special interests are a somewhat common topic. But I have never before, nor since, seen anyone us that acronym.

And I HOPE I NEVER DO again. You can write out "special interests". Atleast you can in the title, and in the OP. An internal acronym used within a thread after the topic has been introduced is fine. For example if you want to discuss "the Central African Republic" you should spell it out in both your title and in your OP. But after that -everyone who participates in that particular thread is entitled to call it "the C.A.R.".

But that is a pretty good list of commonly used alphabet soup on this site.

I have long thought that Alex should place something on the main page of this site that you click entitled "guide to wrongplanet language:glossary of commonly used terms".

Or they could make this very thread a permanent sticky.

I tend not to be very good with acronyms unless they are ones that have been very frequently used.

Some abbreviations can be confusing. I remember never knowing what “FWIW” and “IIRC” meant until I searched (I saw them on other websites. I can’t remember if they were on here).

That's the problem with that particular acronym. Unlike "DX", or "LFA" it almost never used even here on an autism site like this.

"Self injury" is a logical guess. I thought it might be something like "S.S.I" (maybe the person made a typo, and left an S out, or its some govt thing that's like SSI). SSI meaning "social security income". Something that some disabled folks get here in the US.

Young folks tend to strive to be cool, rather than be clear, and use slang or their own acronym that no one else has ever seen when they post here. And they wont explain it. So their posts that might as well be written in secret code. Very annoying.

In Britain abbreviations maybe completely different. SSI here means a protected area... It is actually SSSI. Site of Special Scientific Interest... (Some say So the of special Interest). Is an area of land with restrictions.
