Hello
As you know, having ASD creates all sorts of problems for each of us as individuals.
Out of interest, what would you include in your ideal ASD home and why?
Also, what would your idea location be?

I ask this question because specialist housing developments are still not that common for people with ASD.
Although, some areas are more supportive and others. One example of this is the Sweetwater Spectrum Community Housing, which i believe was originally funded by several of the parents of those who now live in the area.

Personally. As i am one of the many hypersensitive types of people with ASD.
I would ideally like my home to have no windows apart from one in the ceiling, and have walls
that are made of several feet (or even metres) of concrete.

Also, ideally, i would like such a property, or estate of similar sensory detached properties,
to be earth sheltered or built so that the properties are underground, with just the window in the ceiling
(which would be made of acoustic glass and designed for high levels of isolation).

On the inside of the property, i would like simple curves, with easy identifiable areas.
All walls and even ceilings to be covered with acoustic traps which reduce or completely eliminate any reverb.
Having windows only in the ceiling would also minimise my exposure to sensory info from the outside.

That to me would be bliss. As i would not see or hear anything.
I know that concrete isn't perfect when it comes to being eco friendly, but it is the best for sound isolation.
In the long term however, such an earth sheltered home does offer considerable advantages, not only in terms
of helping to keep my mental health is a good state

but in terms of heating / air con. As earth is known to work well for both keeping warn in winter and keeping cold in summer.

The only major problem i would envisage is flooding, but i am sure the many clever architects that are on this planet
are able to offer a solution to this. One way or another.

Also. in terms of location. I would say my ideal location would be somewhere low sensory. even away from an estate. Isolated, but on the outskirts of a small town where shops for food, cafe's, bars etc. for socialising could be accessed without too much trouble. In a low crime area.

My home should run on sustainable energy, get plenty of sunshine, and have trees or other scenery visible. It should be compact, but not need frequent re-configuration for various functions. The air should never smell of burnt flesh (AKA fast food, etc.) The biggest need is for uninterrupted sleep, and for that, I can handle a lot of random noise if I know that there is someone awake who will deal with potential interruptions so I don't have to think about what I hear.

Firstly, my ideal home would be out in a small, isolated village, surrounded by big moors and fields and farms, and not a busy city for a few miles. No traffic congestion, no rush hour, no crime, no unfamiliar people. Just friendly neighbours that don't judge, and you know almost everybody in the village, and people only use cars to get to places that are out of the village, otherwise people don't use cars much because they work local or they're retired. Basically, an old-fashioned village full of friendly people, easy to make friends, and everybody looks out for one another.

Now let's get to my actual house, which will be a cottage, with it's own surrounding garden and a country-themed kitchen, and plenty of room for my hobbies, DVDs, teddy bears, and pet cats. Oh, and my boyfriend or mother or any other family members (depending on how much room there is), if not then they can come and stay in one of the spare rooms. But I'd like everybody I love to at least live in the same village.

So, yeah, that's my ideal home; country life, friendly people, loving family and partner, lots of farms and wildlife, and enough space for all my stuff.

I've lived in cities, and in the country, so I'm trying a small town now. There must be exceptions, but the general situation is for everything to be run and "approved" by the people who went to high school here, and then were not smart enough to move away. There's a superficial friendliness, but I'll never belong here. I did a lot of volunteer work, missed one meeting, and was never invited back. My letters are as well read as litter. I've looked at a lot of Intentional Communities, and they all seem to be for groupers, not a federation of loners.

Somewhere vast, likely out in the open, a bit closer to nature... And somewhere where I could definitely walk into the city whenever I feel like it.

The actual house... Don't mind much about aesthetics myself.
If possible, I'd like a bedroom that faces the sunset and the kitchen faces the sunrise. I'd also want to well ventilated, with controllable lights and controllable room humidity.

I got two contrasting preferences related to sizes and belongings. It's either:
Very small and also very frugal. Yet more homely with a huge yard. Could care less if there's energy as long as there's running water.
Or quite huge with a lot of things to keep in as if it's more of a personal workshop than a house. A lot of windows and more spaces all for myself. Lots of gadgets and technology only for me to handle. Therefore, good power and water supply.

I like to sense a lot of spaces. So I'm going to avoid living in those cities that happened to be few of the densest cities on earth as I'm few hours away from said cities.

As for the community... I'm not sure to be honest. I'd say something on the lines of 'orderly' and 'quiet' -- and definitely somewhere I could be truly allowed to be alone.
But that's what's just lacking to my current place of residence from my ideal, so I don't know what or how else since I'm not exactly missing things except for the lack of certain privileges like an extra room where no one's allowed to be in. :skull:

I literally live in a village where everyone knows each other, where everyone smiles a lot, greets you almost anytime they noticed you, would randomly strike a conversation as you passby, surrounded by many snippets of conversations, literally can get away going out on my lazy wear, and few to none of those dubious and superficial crappy stuff.

First Choice: Heaven.

Second Choice: My childhood home.

Third choice: A fully operational, fully automated, fully self-contained starship that is capable of faster-than-light travel, with an eclectic mix of ethnicities, crewed by people who live their belief that all people deserve to be treated well, and that no one person or group is intrinsically superior to any other.

Fourth Choice: A fully operational and self-cleaning holodeck.

I'm reminded of the Herman cartoon of a guy telling the travel agent "I wanna go to a deserted island with fabulous night life."

a modern retelling of the 1970's. Ive been planning mine and my husbands home since i was like 10 years old. What I want hasnt changed since then. Its going to be both classic and modern, with a chic 1970s feel.

Joe90,

Your description sounds lovely, especially the part with pet cats.

I want a relatively small place. It will just be me, my dog, and I plan on adopting two cats once I get my own place as well (two just strikes me as a good number, for some reason). I'd need space for the critters to run around, but I don't want much more space than we would need. I like small spaces, having a bunch of extra space would make me feel anxious. I'd rather have a house than an apartment because there would be less dealing with other people and I could really feel like the place was mine. I'm not really sure about the home besides that.

Location... I'd like somewhere out in nature, in a forested area and/or by mountains (absolutely not a beach because I have major sensory issues with sand). But I'd have to live somewhere where I could get public transportation since I don't know if I'll ever be able to drive. I'd definitely prefer somewhere with a cooler (and not humid) climate because I can handle being cold a lot better than I can handle being sweaty, and I would love to live somewhere where I stood a good chance of getting to see the Northern Lights.

A two bedroom townhouse in the city of Chicago with a full-time live-in caregiver. Steinway grand piano. Car for the caregiver to drive me places so I wouldn't have to take public transit. A king size bed with a dark blue comforter and dark blue sheets. No stairs between the first floor and outside so I can roll my bowling bag straight out. Near a bowling alley and a gym with a full size swimming pool. 70 inch TV. Sensory room with crash pads for when I have meltdowns.

I'm glad you got all that, Living!

My ideal home would have as little stuff as possible. A Steinway would be cool, too (though I don't play piano LOL)

Big, plenty of space to hoard stuff and have loads of cats. Somewhere inn the countryside well away from other people. Acres of land with woods. Oh and a personal cinema and simulation room.
