My stepdaughter took me grocery shopping today. As we headed to go round the aisles there was a woman promoting an alternative to red bull. She had several little sample sizes of the drinks . She began to talk to us. My stepdaughter tried the two different flavours that were there, and made conversation with the woman . I just stood there feeling awkward , not responding and not going to try the drinks .

I would have not stopped, nor would I have allowed a child with me to sample addictive drinks.

^ I've only tried such drinks a handful of times. My stepdaughter usually gets a can of red bull when she takes me shopping .

That's interesting about them being addictive. What in them does that?

Sugar, caffeine and other stimulants. Otherwise, they're just flavored fizzy-water.

I'm supposedly a fast caffeine metaboliser .

rs762551(A;A)
Magnitude: 2
Frequency: 53.1%
References:38
Fast Caffeine Metabolizer. Unlike the majority of people, caffeine is broken down faster in your liver, so it has less effect on you. Supposedly this decreases heart attack risk, although other studies show caffeine is generally good for the heart. Caffeine will be less effective at preventing Breast Cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, and Parkinson's disease. Caffeine will not make your breasts smaller.

rs762551, also known as -164A>C or -163C>A, is a SNP encoding the CYP1A2*1F allele of the CYP1A2 gene. For historic reasons, the rs762551(C) allele is considered the wild-type, even though it is the rarer allele in most populations. The rs762551(A) allele is the 'fast metabolizer' allele known as CYP1A2*1F; the (C) allele is by comparison a slower metabolizer of certain substrates (including caffeine). In terms of genotypes, only rs762551(A;A) individuals are considered fast metabolizers. Individuals who are rs762551(A;C) heterozygotes or rs762551(C;C) homozygotes are both considered slow metabolizers. The CYP1A2 gene encodes a member of the cytochrome p450 family of proteins, which metabolize nutrients and drugs

I wouldn’t have done anything.

His stepdaughter is a full-grown woman.

I might have been impatient to get out of the store—I might have made a beeline to the checkout line—but there’s nothing I could have “done” in that situation.

You have the right, of course, not to try those drinks.

I probably would have done the same as you. Not everybody's interested in trying a sample.

I would've done the same, most likely.

If the person I am with gets a sample I might try one to, but usually I don't care enough to stop for them. I may have tried that one I do like energy drinks from time to time.

Where does he say that?  If she's a grown woman, then sure, let her choose her own poison.  But if she's a child, then the responsible adult can (and probably should) intervene.

Strictly speaking I didn't mention whether she was an adult or child on this particular thread . However I have mentioned my stepdaughter before , and from that it should be quite clear she's an adult .

Thanks for clarifying .

But you DID say she TOOK YOU shopping.

And as you say, you have talked about this adult step daughter, who helps you out with practical stuff, often before.
So Fnord could have figured it out. :)

But I agree with Fnord that energy drinks should be treated like hard liquor. Sipped and not chugged like soda pop if you have to drink one at all.

And they don't give out "samples" of vodka in stores. Lol!

I would have done the same thing. Not sampled the wares, and not gotten into chatting with the lady sales rep.

Nothing to be ashamed of. A sales rep hawking something I was interested in might have inspired me to chitchat with them, or (if I am eager to get the shopping done) not. Either way is okay.

I do think Fnord makes a good point about such drinks and children though .

I could have figured it out only if I had read one particular post by one particular member out of many thousands of posts by many hundreds of members.

I used to think that assuming everyone else knows all the details of everybody else's life was strictly an NT thing.
