Feeling awkward in the supermarket
My stepdaughter took me for the weekly shop today. As we were going round there was someone she'd worked with in the same aisle. She stopped to talk to them . I stood to the side ,feeling and looking awkward. I'm sure other people coming along the aisle weren't too happy with my blocking them , though I did try to move out of people's way .
Ya, I get extremely awkward when in the nut section, or occasionally when deciding on what chocolate to buy.
I don't know if it's to do with information overload - all the choices. Almonds, pecans, walnuts, macadamias, brazil nuts, cashews, peanuts... dried, salted, peeled, sugared, with shells... mixed, unmixed, different regions, different sizes.... it DRIVES ME CRAZY!! !
all I like, to varying degrees, but of course the most preferred ones tend to be more expensive. So that leaves to considerations on what other items I need to buy. And then I start to feel like people are watching me, and many times they are, because I stand so long looking at the nuts.
A few times I've had meltdowns in the nut section and chocolate aisle. I just need to 'get out' and leave without buying anything, even though I desperately needed items like bread and vegetables.
In fact I am certain it is information overload. How many others have this issue?
I detest shopping due to the noise, social interactions, but also because of the information overload.
I wish they'd just put the different types of nuts and chocolate at the end of each aisle, or only have one type to choose from per shelf. This is why sometimes I prefer smaller supermarkets - even though the prices are higher and the quality not as good, it is easier.
I hate when that happens. It always seems that the other two people talking are standing in the 'right' spaces where they're not going to be in anyone's way, while I have no choice but to stand in an awkward space where I feel I am in everyone's way.
When I was a teenager and was with relatives or friends in a supermarket, I used to stand and daydream if I was just following them around and not actually buying anything. That usually resulted in me blocking everyone's way. One time I was enjoying a good daydream, when all of a sudden a couple of old ladies came up from behind me, gently touched my shoulder and said, "excuse me, dear, can we get by?" That brought me right out of my daydream, and I know they were polite but I found it rather patronizing to touch me like that.

Whenever I go grocery shopping with my mom, it happens when I put something that I think is for a reasonable price in the shopping cart or whenever she believes I am forcing to buy food she believes is unhealthy.
Such situations tend to set her off and in turn, I try to keep my mouth shut whenever we are in an aisle together.
