Gt granddaughter's 2nd birthday on Sunday

I am bricking it about being there . I feel OK with my stepdaughter and her children, but am very awkward/ nervous with most other people . At her 1st birthday I sat like a lemon not knowing what to say, or when to say it , to the father and paternal aunts and uncles . The whole knowing when to speak thing flummoxes me

You're a great-grandfather? Now....that's quite an accomplishment.

I've never even been a father.

Being precise step great grandfather . I've known my stepdaughter since 1982 though , and her actual father disappeared from her life when she was little.

On my wife's side, I'm certainly a great uncle, and might be a great-great uncle (I'm not sure).

On my family's side, I'm just an uncle.

I'm not really close to any of my "nieces and nephews." Though I'm not "not close" to them, either.

My nieces are 25 AND 22. I've seen them infrequently . My navigational skills are poor so virtually the only time I get to London , where my sister lives , has been when my brother meets off the train when my father is on his annual , or so, visit to the UK. My sister and my nieces visited me about once a year at my previous place.

I've been here just over 2 years , and there has been no visits from my brother,sister or nieces .
