Had someone buzz at 7pm saying he wanted to read the meter . I'm on a smart meter , which supposedly automatically sends meter readings . I told him it was too late and I didn't believe him . He just said "OK" . My anxiety level went up several notches , and hasn't come down .yet .

I admit I don't know what that means, don't know what a smart meter is...so don't have a lot of input.

But I hope you're able to get your anxiety level back down.

You absolutely did the right thing. Rest easy and you can calm down now knowing that you're safe.

WHAT IS A SMART METER AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Smart meters measure how much gas and electricity you’re using, as well as what it’s costing you and display this on a handy in-home display.

With a smart meter you can wave goodbye to complicated meter readings. The smart meter shows a digital meter reading and automatically sends the reading to your energy supplier at least once a month, so you will receive accurate, not estimated bills.

Probably a rip-off.

Did you call your stepdaughter?

You did the exact right thing. If you ever question if a meter reader is legit, always call the utility company and ask them.

Ah, in that case sounds like someone was maybe trying to scam you, you certainly did right by not giving them any info and hanging up. That can be anxiety provoking for sure...but you certainly did the correct thing.

Phoned the police and told them what happened . I was told not much could be done without a physical description , but that I had done the right thing not letting the person in . They've made a note in case anything further happens . It may just be silliness on my part , but I do think if there's someone suspicious trying to get into people's places then that needs to be known .

I agree. If someone else reports with a description, they already have this as background information.

I had a similar situation twice. Someone was posing as a comcast cable guy and was going to people's houses to steal from them. He came to my door once when I lived in Maryland and then interestingly enough again, when I lived in a neighboring state. I did not let him in because I was not interested in comcast. But I had a suspicion so the first time, I called comcast and they told me that they never send people out to sell door to door. So the second time I knew what was going on and called the police immediately. And shortly the second time I believe that he was caught.

You did the right thing.

They installed a smart meter on my electricity pole several years ago. My driveway is 800 feet long and meter readers would have to drive up to the house, and face my dog in order to read my meter. Now all they have to do is drive past my house. It saves them a lot of time.
