No.

But if I was (I'm guessing likely in connection with being dx'ed) I think I'd try to explain that "I don't, but the traits fit and I think I am. It explains how I am."

Yes, though to be honest I experience the reverse more.

People actually assign the label to me if I make the mistake of telling them when I can no longer hide it. When I tell them what's really wrong, it explains so much to them that it supplants any personal traits.

My relationships goes from "I have a problem, please be cognizant of it and I will reciprocate" to me being unhealthy and mentally ill beyond repair to them, and I'm ultimately treated worse in the end and lose all my credibility. Suddenly, I am known by the disorder, syndrome, disease, or whatever label they use and no longer as a person.

Unfortunately, I have not yet found a way, a person, group, or organization which sees me as anything more than either a disordered individual or as a vulnerable person. Since my sensory overload is easily mistaken as an emotional one, I am perceived as being weaker or more vulnerable when I think quite the opposite is true, because I've had to adapt to lots of verbal slander from people who I've accidently wronged by missing cues.

I don't really understand the question. Are they suggesting that autistic is something that you simply choose to be?

my guess would be that your examiner is looking to see if your answers are biased towards a positive diagnosis, but no...I have not been asked that question.

It's not that I want to be , but more about looking for something that explains the way I am .

This was asked on a mental health forum, not by an examiner.

Ah, I see, my mistake...

Your answer about about wanting to know why your are the way you are is a good response to that question. For myself it was something of a relief to finally know, and to be validated.

I always like to rephrase something like this with another identifier as a mental exercise. I usually use the word “black” or “gay”. If it sounds offensive, than the statement about autism was too. Not to say that either are the same, because there are long, specific histories with both of those terms that make either not an exact fit, but I think we’re in the ballpark.

“Why do you want so bad to be black?”

Either the person in question IS black, so a person with two parents of predominantly African descent, the person is mixed race and is identifying as black, or the person is “acting black” or appropriating black culture.

The middle example might apply to you if you were testing as borderline autistic. That’s the only way I can think of that you could chose whether or not to identify as autistic.

The first example is what is likely going on here. Some fool arguing with a person about being what he is. Weird. A chicken is a chicken. An autistic is an autistic. Deal with it.

The last appears to be what the person is accusing you of. This is equally weird. I have, believe it or not, seen people appropriate aspie culture. Pretend to be on the spectrum when they are not. Like a munchausens deal. But not likely.

I am how I am -warts and all. I'd find it very difficult to pretend.

The guy is a troll who has taken against you for some reason. I assume that by pulling you down he makes himself feel better. Hope it hasn't upset you too much.

Why don't you let that person go and stop wasting your time?

On the bigger issue, there is just a lot of people who hate labels. They think labels excuse the real reason for failing which in their minds is just not trying hard enough or using it to mooch off of hard-working taxpayers.
