Do you jump when mail comes through the letterbox?

Yes I know most people here live in the US and have their mail in mailboxes outside, but if you have a letterbox (a slot in the door where the mail comes through), does it make you jump every time?

It makes more of a sudden loud clattering noise than you'd expect, and I always jump every time because it always sounds like someone is breaking in or something. It's like the postman (mailman) chucks the mail through the slot and slams the flap down as loud as he can, and the mail (papers in envelopes) clatter loudly on to the (carpeted) hallway floor. Why so loud?

Used to do so all the time the first few months after I moved in to my current apartment. I live in a studio, so if I'm home I'm close enough to hear it well regardless of what I'm doing. I got used to it though and no longer get a scare unless I'm really lost in my thoughts when it happens or if it's way louder than usual.

As for why they're so loud, the delivers are often in a hurry, having to cover certain area in certain time, so they do whatever is fastest, which usually means pushing stuff at the hatch and letting gravity handle the rest.

Our dogs always alert us when the mail carrier arrives in the neighborhood by barking, especially because they tend to park their truck in front of our house. The barking hurts my ears occasionally so I'll put in my earphones if it is bothering me. If it weren't for the dogs though, I'm sure it would startle me too.
