A question of feet- anyone else
This was prompted by a search for "ASD" "weak ankles" .
https://www.nursingcenter.com/ce_articl ... 2000-00006
That was the1st result I got . My ankles have played up a fair number of times . Last time was when a very soft backed and wide shoe that didn't really support my ankle at all . The likelihood of it happening increases the longer I walk .
I also have flat feet and a high instep, and wore insoles for a while when a child . At prep school the headmaster's wife had me doing foot exercises .
I wonder how many others have funny feet . If any of you want to branch this topic out to other things that are not part of the diagnostic process, but you know/think are more common with us then go right ahead .
I was told off for walking with flat feet recently by a neighbour. Strange as sometimes I walk on my toes. Not exactly my toes... The fronts of my feet.
My big toes are much larger then the other toes. That is a little different, as I thought it was normal, but I was told that ones big toes were supposed to be shorter then the next toe to them. Or is it that my feet and toes are normal and everyone elses are not?
My feet are deformed because I've always walked on my tippy toes. My toes are bunched up and look like balls because they curl and aren't straight. My arch is high and the ball of my foot is the largest area, not the heel.

One of my abnormalities is that I love my feet. I often go about the house barefooted. I find them very useful. If I drop something on the floor, often times I will pick it up with my feet.
As a result, I place a high degree of emphasis in keeping my feet happy. When I was young I found a type of shoe called "the Earth Shoe". It was a hippy design. The center balance was offset and the shoe was wide. They looked a little funny but they felt oh so good when I wore them. In my old age, I tend to buy well designed shoes. One of the brands that I use is made in England. It is called "Clark". It is a well designed shoe.
Another late change I have made is to buy stockings made out of bamboo fabric. They feel oh so nice.

Clarks are not cheap. I am using a make that started out selling bicycle panniers and went from there. Karrimor.
Clarks used to make shoes for people with different sized feet, but in recent times they turned towards the more popular mass selling markets so they stopped doing it. One of the grand daughters of an elderly lady I know (Or could be a great grand daughter or even a relation! She has over 100 grand and great grandchildren... We loose track!). Well. This little girl had a problem when Clarks stopped their custom service, and there was no one else, so a few of them got together and prayed, and right in front of their feet, not only did the smaller foot grow two sizes to match the other, but her leg length grew to match the other as well!
I am blessed as both my feet are the same size. And with very strong big toes at the fore, I can really kick if I wanted to! I can get a football to go much further then others can, but I do wonder if because my big toes are promenent, it could be why I don't quite have the same ball control. My brother asked me why I always used the front of my foot.
Maybe I would make a great ballerina! HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAAH!
Flat feet is a medical condition or anomaly. My father had flat feet. When you walk barefoot, it is the impression left in the ground that shows if you have the condition.

The image on the left is a normal foot. The image on the right is a flat foot. It is estimated 20-30% of the general population have flat feet or flatfoot. The image in the middle is called a high arch and is rarer.

Right, they are expensive. But I love my feet. Over the years I have bought many pairs of shoes. Most of them even the good brands fall apart after about 6 months. I can generally get about 4 years out of the Clark brand.

I believe I have always had poor muscle tone which has caused both weak ankles and poor walking/running stride. I have a theory that it is due to mitochondrial disorder which is also known to be associated with ASD and other issues I have. I will talk to a doc about it in the future. I have been talking carnitine supplements in the mean time and have noticed small but noticeable improvement in weight/strength measurements and possibly cognitive improvements.
There's plenty of research into this subject. When I was a kid I believe not much was known about mitochondrial disorder.
In this study, I hit all of the deficit areas which are present >50% in the mitochondrial/ASD children studied (see table 1):
Mitochondrial Disease in Autism Spectrum Disorder Patients: A Cohort Analysis
In this study, Oculomotor abnormalities was the highest occurrence of neurological findings uncommon in ASD. Not only did I have this but I had treatment for it.

Based on what jimmy m posted, I am flat footed. It's nice to know a decent amount of people have it. I always get the wide shoes (so 12W instead of regular 12) and my feet often feel very exhausted when I wake up, but it naturally goes away after an hour or so. Does anyone else feel this way?

Hmmm...
I have this weird wide feet, that it's a bit of a headache to find the right size with a right width. Feet's not entirely flatfooted.
And my ankles do falter easy with misstep on angles -- angles that supposed to twist ankles, except I never had any case of ankle injury or even pain at all. If I had any lower limb pain, it's usually my legs first and then the soles after a long or strenuous walks than my feet or ankles.
Instead have this tendency of breaking footwear. It's more than just my habit of walking several hours a week.
Whatever steps supposedly twist my ankles -- which is probably countless times, it damages my shoe's heels/outsoles, or my sandals/slippers/flip-flops' straps/whatever upperparts.
And if my legs feel tired, I tend to either tiptoe or walk on sides of feet. Or start walking weird.
On top of that, my balance is good and my first instinct is to able to catch myself stumbling on any angles than fall altogether.
I'd only ever fall on a trip if the obstacle is either or both too fast, too slippery (in which most people have trouble with) or/and too high to skip from it (usually halfway high to my knees or higher -- one leg falters, another one usually catches it by stepping over ahead).
Regardless -- I do not have low muscle tone, I have no signs of dyspraxia, I'm not physically clumsy unless confused, inattentive, overwhelmed or stressed out... Yet my 'movement', 'stances', occasionally my gait are no different from autistics.

This begins to remind me of a play that I saw performed in a college garden in Cambridge in the 70s, called "The Idiots Karamazov." It was a sort of spoof of Dostoevsky and Chekov all rolled into one. And in a memorable line, spoken by Alyosha Karamazov, he lamented "How can there be a God if there are feet?"
Apologies for the interruption...now back to the topic...
