Yes. Me too but , I actually nowadays will ask if they are being serious . It’s even harder to recognize in the written word.

One time I thought my boss was telling a joke. He was serious. I laughed. He almost fired me.

Autistic people are known for having difficulty understanding Jokes.
If you've watched The Big Bang Theory, you can see how Sheldon Cooper has difficulty with things like sarcasm.

Autistic people tend to take things literally.
Jokes usually twist reality. ;)
