I'm discovering I have double-jointed superpowers...

Anyway, I've heard this condition often appears in autistics, more info?

I don’t know if I have EDS, but I do score a 9 out 9 on the Beighton hyper mobility scale. I also have other signs of a connective tissue abnormality, severely nearsighted, scoliosis, mitral valve prolapse. The YouTube channel Mindful Divergence has some videos on EDS in autistics.

I’m actually quite stiff. I can’t touch my toes without effort.

There is some association between Ehlers-Danlos and autism. But one can have Ehlers-Danlos and not be autistic—and vice versa.

I don't know about it appearing more often in autistics, but my NT wife has been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos. Unfortunately it's much more than just being hyper-mobile. It'll probably take her away from me someday by way of an aneurysm.

^ I’m so sorry you have that cloud hanging over the horizon.

I think this topic came up in another thread, so I googled and read about it. It’s possible I have one of the 13 kinds. Which was kind of surprising to me. I have an undiagnosed connective tissue disorder. No doctor has been able to diagnose it. But I had never heard of Ethlers-Danlos before. Anyway, it is just treated symptomatically.

There are 13 different types, as BlazingStar stated. Only the vascular variant COULD cause reduced lifespan. I would thoroughly research this.

Angnix has a cool attitude about her flexibility.

It's BS. Autism is not a physical disorder, it's a mental disorder.

There are some physical disorders associated with autism—especially those of a chromosomal nature. About 30% of males with Fragile X, for example, meet the diagnostic criteria for having an autism spectrum disorder. 70% don’t, it should be emphasized.

There's no difference in reality. The brain is just as physical as anything else & it's completely interconnected.

I probably have some variation on this thing & since I live in America, there is no possible way to get a diagnosis or treatment without breaking the bank.

Yes but autism alone doesn't include physical differences, otherwise autism would be diagnosed a lot easier.

You're not kidding - the genetic testing my wife underwent cost $27,000. The insurance company was kind enough to cover it fortunately for us.

I think what the OP might be saying is that there may be a CORRELATION between autism and EDS, not that autism causes EDS or that everyone with EDS is autistic. I’ve heard that EDS and joint hyper mobility in general IS more common in the autistic population but it’s not really understood why.

^I get that impression, too.

To Joe: I do agree with what you’re saying. Most of the time, autism doesn’t cause outward physical “differences.”

:( This whole "too weird to live & too rare to die" thing has been on my nerves for a while.

Only in America would one have to buy answers about their own body.
