Most ADS folks can recognize emotional facial expressions, especially negative. Emotional unresponsiveness is often due to not learning the social context to respond to the expressions. This involves the mirror neurons, so activities that strengthen mirror neuron connections improve Alexithymia. Our current society expects this to be learned implicitly (by chance). Most benefit from explicit teaching (by design).

I want to know what are some examples of this difficulty understanding the social context drawn from movies or tv series you watched.

For example I get lost where body language and social stuff is very subtle. Like in a lot of Grey's Anatomy scenes the characters look at each other, and suddenly one of them knows he has to leave the others alone, or comfort someone. It's like magic. And in real life I wouldn't be able to do something like that.

What are your examples?

That's bit of a tricky one IMO cause I kinda lerned from seeing others and kinda watched how the other person's reaction was except I didn't really bother with the context as I was always alone so I didn't care too much to learn these days I'm great at masking my lack of understanding and thought it worked ok except when it came to serious decisions and needing to understand the context with people I didn't know or know well it became very apparent that I had less understanding of others intentions or implied references. The whole expecting to grasp the meaning without the words being said. I picked up sarcasm very easy this way though.

I can't think of much in my own case, though I think it's there. I suspect it isn't so much down to a lack of social education as hyperfocus.

It's hard for me to stay alert to the context of a situation because the context is part of the big picture and I'm absorbed in the details at the centre of my focus. But when I do manage to step back and look, I'm not sure that I'm all that bad at figuring out the social context.

I'm also often so distracted by challenges to my personal comfort in social situations that I probably miss a lot that way. It's a full time job sidestepping the physical and emotional discomfort that drops onto me when I allow others to have any control over where I am and what I do, or when I try to modify my behaviour to seem what I imagine would be agreeable to them.

I do have to be told sometimes when I am not wanted. I don't know if it is the body language bit or if it is that I don't get hints. Hints are not my strong point, as at times I can pick up that someone is giving me a hint (Like when they are making it obvious), but I can't fathom out what they mean so I end up not only putting my foot in it, but putting my feet in it when I ask what the hint means!

That's what I wanted to say. Thanks for the "how to explain it" :) it's very hard to take in information when you're aware people have rules they expect others to just get. I find almost every NT doesn't realise that everything with me needs to be individually processed and pieced together in order to get the context right and then it takes me time to figure out the often hidden meaning in the words they use plus it takes an incredible amount of energy and I'm often left tired and burnt out and need days if not longer to recover where I often spend emotionally unhinged so I get upset easy often with sadness rather than anger these days though. I find NT's take for granted that they have BS subliminal power to not require thought and energy to have conversation and not required intense planning for everything they do from conversations to activities without the requirements of planning every minute detail. :(
