hello
my new year resolution is to lose some excess weight which I have put on during the coronavirus due to bad diet, drinking and lack of exercise.

So my plan is to:

give up alcohol
drink more water
eat low calorie low fat vegetarian diet
go to the gym exercise every day
maybe take alli weight loss pills
maybe go back to karate (which i did for 10 years as a kid)

any other suggestions
any one know about diets and supplements, as used by weight lifters
although am planning to stay away from thermogenix
as they tend to be too stimulant based for me

having ASD with anxiety, not a good substance to take...

any one else have any suggestions

Totally cut out snacks and junk food and don't buy any. Limit it. Work out at least 30 minutes a day 3-5 times a week. Use small breakfast bowls instead of large ones. Use a small plate instead of a big plate, do some crunches everyday during commercial breaks or listen to a song a day and do crunches or lunges.

To save on gym membership, buy some work out videos or games and do them at home instead in your living room. When it gets nice out, go for a job every day. In the summer, do it when it's still cool out or wait till evening when the sun is down.

Cut out juice and pop and stick to low calorie drinks and water or 0 calorie juice.

Do not take weight loss pills, those are company scams.

Meet people who want to achieve similar goals as you regarding weight loss.

Drink plenty of water, but don't overdo it.

Sugar-free soda is okay IMO, but limit it.

Energy drinks are good, but buy energy drinks that have caffeine at or below 100 MG.

I lift weights regularly and take one supplement (BCAA). If you are a new lifter, just now returning to exercising, doing light workouts, or not exercising very often (like less than 5 days per week), you don't need any supplements. Supplements are for people who are athletes, bodybuilders, or doing a high volume of exercise, so high that we struggle to get sufficient energy or nutrition from regular food.

Make sure to get a sufficient amount of sleep so that you recover from your workouts.

Do not take weight loss pills.

Going to the gym every single day is not a good idea if you are just starting to exercise or re-starting, especially if you do karate as well. Give your body time to adjust to the new activity level and work up to more exercise days. Days off help your muscles recover. You can do a light activity like walking every day.

You can also avoid the gym and the coronovirus by doing cycling, handball outdoors, aerobics at home, etc. There are all kinds of free aerobics videos online.

The key to cycling is to make it an adventure and enjoy it. Do not look at it as a competition. Start shorter trips and then gradually increase the distance. It is the distance work at a sedate pace that keeps you fit and reduces your weight rather then short distance sprints. Be light on the pedals and use the gearing rather then strain. Straining the gears gives one foot ache and tends to give one numb feet. (I used to push gears that I have no idea how I did it! When I was 14 to 15 in school, I had done so much cycling that I lifted all the weights in the school multi gym including a kid my age standing on top trying to prevent me from lifting the weights just using one leg! He could only lift 40% of that weight using both of his legs! I rarely tried the multigym. I think it was my first and only try at pushing weights and it was one of the tough kids from the school who decided to dare me to do it! He was the one trying to prevent me from lifting the weights. I was doing it as if they were not there as I used to push just as hard on my bicycle!) But what I am saying is that a steady sedate pace is better for distance work, and it is the distance work that is the most enjoyable and you get the most out of in both weight loss and overall fitness...
Always start short distance rides first and it is better to ride every other day or twice a week rather then daily as daily does not allow the muscles to fully recover before the next ride. (I used to ride 7 days a week for a few years and it takes a lot out of you!)
I would recommend a rack and a pair of panniers, and some nice lights. Look for lights which last rather then bright lights which only give you an hour or two. Two front and back lights maybe a solution as one can have one of both types. One can carry spare clothes and something warm, and some tools, some snacks and a pair of water bottles.

Eat less, exercise more.

Yes, it really is just that simple.

Use your Aspieness.

In October 2018 my weight was starting to affect the results of my blood tests. I am an Aspie; I am a creature of habit. I made some minor adjustments to my lunch routine and, through repetition, by February 2020 I had lost 35 pounds (about 16 kg or 2.5 stones)...and my blood tests are once again doing good. Your answer might not be in your lunch routine but you might find it somewhere in your routines.

Since March 2020 my weight has stayed roughly stable. (Due to the pandemic my bride is stuck at home more and I have pretty much lost control of my lunches  --but my lunches are now tastier and probably otherwise healthier.)

Unless you have a set time you're wanting/needing to lose weight I'd suggest not to go really hard at the start. A lot of the time when people jump in and go as hard as they can but end up burning out or quitting so far in. It tends to make exercise pretty miserable that way too.

Depending how in shape you are would change my suggestion of how much, for how long, and what to start with.

HIIT exercises tend to be one of the fastest ways to lose weight. But if you're VERY out of shape that might feel like too much. In that case some simple ones, walking etc to build some strength and stamina to start might be better.

Before and after you exercise, stretch!

Eating healthier is best, but you don't need to go full on vegetarian. Unless you really want to do that.

If you don't know what your BMI is you might want to look that up. It will give you an idea of what your target zone should be. If it's a huge gap, it'd be all the more reason to give your body time to adjust to the new changes.
