Define "our society".
I'm not from US and I have a feeling that my national personality disorder is not narcissism but rather borderline - only extreme emotions and idealisation-devaluation cycles.

The US culture I find pretty narcissist.

Quote:
Narcissistic personality disorder involves a pattern of self-centered, arrogant thinking and behavior, a lack of empathy and consideration for other people, and an excessive need for admiration. Others often describe people with NPD as cocky, manipulative, selfish, patronizing, and demanding.

Humanity, by its nature, is egocentric.

Regarding the other traits of narcissism, here in Australia, people are less considerate than they used to be, now that drugs and organised crime are fully entrenched in our society.

I have said often that relationships are generally superficial these days.

Absolutely! If you examine the hypocrisy of religion you might notice that "There is one true faith..." is the prevalent dogma, and, "Everyone else is wrong..."

More and more people want fame, they don't care where it comes from, they just crave it like a junky looking for a fix: if someone is famous they need no other credential, even though they may be utterly incompitant.

The idea that if you happen to be different you are seen as wrong and therefore are no longer human is gaining traction around the world.

The more people we get on this tiny planet, the more zealous/radical people become with their ideals.

Nationalism taking precedence over the individual's rights/freedoms is on a steep incline.

It's just a thought,

American culture has been narcissistic for a long time. It only seems worse because social media allows more people to display their narcissism.

Which society, united states?

You can't measure narcissism

And I am only 37 so I can't speak to things that occurred forty years ago

But for some reason I get the feeling that united states has always been narcissistic

North American society has always been that way. It all started when the European settlers decided it would be a great idea that First Nations people should only get 10% of the land and live along Indian reserves.
