I was diagnosed PDD-NOS/ AS (autism spectrum). Someone mentioned to me having similar pre-use of the Aspergers term dx that was something-something /AS (autism spectrum).

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other diagnosis terminology that was used in childhood diagnosis of someone with Aspergers before they started calling it that?

- PDD/NOS

- Autistic Disorder: the majority of people diagnosed with AS meets the criteria for AD, than probably some people that were diagnosed with AD in the past, will have been diagnosed with AS today (specially if they had meet the "stereotype" of AS)

- Schizoid Disorder of Childhood and Adolescence - a condition that existed in the DSM-III, defined by social isolation, apparent absence of interest in making friends, and excessive daydreaming

I wonder how they diagnosed sensory issues and stimming?

(and I really think stimming is part of the solution in dealing with sensory issues, besides just adding joy and color to life :D)

The old name for Asperger's syndome was "autistic psychopathy".

"Psychopathy" understood as "illness" of the mind, - not "sociopathy" like today, - I presume.

Yes, it was more used as a term simmilar to "personality disorder".
It meant that the "illness" is not caused by outside influences.

Simple and Chronic Schizophrenia were probably the most common for adults presenting with AS symptoms in the past.

Kids would have been the usual Infantile Autism/Childhood Schizophrenia.

(Not much difference in other words.)

As a child I was diagnosed with:

- speech delay
- developemtal delay
- graphomotoric difficulty
- chronic shyness
- sensory processing disorder
and dyslexia

but noone thought about ASD back than.
(the 80s and 90s)

----

ADD and ADHD was also very often used in the past to explain Aspergers of HFA.

High functioning autistic disorder (AD) - Before AS became an official diagnosis in 1994 (DSM IV), most aspies (particularity those who exhibited developmental delays in childhood) meet the criteria for "Infantile autism" DSM-III (1980) or "Autistic disorder" DSM-III-R (1987). A small percentage of them may have received early intensive interventions as a young child, and achieved significant cognitive and language improvements in order to be considered "high functioning" later in life. Psychologists and psychiatrists consider some them having AS as of today, whereas others are given the unofficial HFA label.

Schizoid personality of childhood - a psychological label used in the DSM-III that was applied to children and adolescents that clinically resembled Hans Asperger's "autistic psychopaths." It was revoked in the DSM-III-R and the behavioral traits associated with it were subsequently integrated in to the broad schizoid personality diagnosis and category of pervasive developmental disorders.

Autistic and schizoid psychopathy of childhood - Hans Asperger (1944), and Dr. Ewa Ssucharewa (1926).

I was Dx'ed as classic autism at 3, when I started kindergarten the teachers thought I had mental retardation until one of the specialists deemed me as hyperkinetic (what they call ADHD today). In 1999 my mother attended a workshop for her nursing job and thus declared me to have Asperger Syndrome - though it's presumed in my case that I'm just holding onto childish behaviors I should have outgrown already
