What makes us do such things?

What do you do?

And when?

. Why do we do it?

I used to as a child but stopped as I would be told off, and smacks on the behind hurt more.

I assumed that all children started doing that when frustrated and unable to express their feelings though now I am not so sure?

The way I’ve understood my often regressive, physical self-hard is that it serves as a way to bring myself back to my body when experiencing extreme emotional disregulation. When I’ve experienced emotional storms I’m often not in my body and therefore out of control.

Physical harm often follows the ‘break’ in a meltdown where I can calm down.

I should add that with increased body and self awareness my physical self harming happens less when experiencing big emotions.

I only do it if I'm in a huge amount of pain in the head... Or in the abdomen.
