You could make them feel guilty by opening up, "Yes, you are right. I feel that I have to delay a reply to what someone asks or says with deliberate consideration. This makes my responses sound wooden or even "robotic". I apologize if this is disconcerting or unfamiliar for you. I suspect that this characteristic has a neurological basis and it is therefore less amenable to conscious control or alteration."

Humor is also a possibility;

I am practicing to fit in after the zombies take over.
Robots seem to be the last ones laid off.
Robot speech seems to cause less triggering of political anger.
My parents were Trekkies and I imprinted on Spock.
My parole officer said that if I lose control and kill even just one more person, I could go back to jail.

Robots get treated much better, except they don't get to leave the factory at night.

In my view just cut them off. The reason they do it is because they can't imagine that it Will hurt your feelings, or they can but don't care either way. It is dehumanizing either way.
