I'm familiar with that story. I think the most scary part is that he was planning to aquire enough nuclear materials to reach critical mass, but without adding a little gallium to stabilize it.

I've got the book by Ken Silverstein, 'The Radioactive Boy Scout'.... entertaining, but scary stuff. PM me if anyone wants to borrow it, and I'll post it out. :)

Talk about scary. But Macgyver... take notes! :wink:

But to think seriously, if he could build a reactor, then surely with some changes, he could build a bomb. Now THAT (!) is a scary thought, especially in these times.

It takes magitudes of order more effort to make a bomb than a reactor. reactors are quite simple and easy to make; bombs take incredibly advanced mathmatics and very highly enriched uranium. The kid did what any reasonallably smart person could do, but to enrich uranium to the point of making a atom bomb or a effective dirty bomb, you would need a industrial complex that would be quite major. If it were so easy, why do 3rd world nations need to import their enriched uranuim instead of making it themselves?
