I cannot tolerate dogs barking. Painful to my ears.

Vaccuum cleaners are the worst.

And washers/dryers when they have been used so much that they make a squeaking noise with each rotation. I cannot stand that.

Slot machines; when around one it might be tolerable, but around a large number of them will drive me completely crazy. These could cause me problems if I am exposed to them too long.

All of these are painful to me, but they don't make me scream in agony(well, the slot machines probably could and came very close to doing so). When they are going on I cannot focus on anything productive at all.

people whispering back and forth in the back of me
chewing noises
music that is played in stores...i bring my ipod with me when i go to barnes and noble.

Right now it's my heater. I think the fan is going bad cause it squeaks on high, and rattles on low and medium, all three are irritating, I usually keep it on high because the sound is fast enough (cause the fan is turning faster) that it blends better at least the rattleing, I don't know why it squeaks on high but not low or medium. I f i kick it it will stop for 30 seconds or so then start again. Last semester it only rattled on high and it wasn't that bad, and if it was set on medium or low it was quiet... NOT ANYMORE... I finally sent my RA an email to see if matainance will come look at it. I know already that cleaning the fan doesn't help (reguardless of the large amount of junk you pull from it), so I think the fan needs to retire and be replaced by a younger more efficient fan that doesn't complain. But somehow I doubt the school will do that despite the private school tuition and high room and board costs they charge... (they could save a ton of money of they put compact flourescents in the ceiling lights and people could then see the work they are trying to do, and if they insulated the stupid windows, that they have all of the heaters sitting directly underneath.) They prolly use steam to heat everything, though which I guess is cheap enough that they don't care. Anyway, I'm done now.

Anything that is too loud.

Scratchy sounds.

Here's one that makes me crazy - my husband listens to talk radio or tv on his headphone in the adjoining room. He often takes off the headphones and lays them down and they're still on. So you can hear the people talking - not loud enough to cleary make out the words but just that scratchy far away people talking sound. EEEEEEEE He says "Nobody can hear that!" because he can't. I can hear it. I go bonkers. Sometimes it's when he's wearing them too.

People snuffing up their noses. It makes me sick, but I can't show it. I want sooo much to give them a handkerchief and tell them to blow their noses. We were never allowed to snuffle like that when I was growing up.

Also, people repeatedly clearing their throats or gasping/coughing like they are in discomfort. There was a girl in my office who would do that every day. I was like a couple of rows over and it was like she was doing it in my ear. Even earplugs didn't really block it out but it helped. She would start out softly then get louder. When I said something to her she got all wide-eyed and said "You can HEAR me?" Well, duh, yes, I can. She finally cut it out and switched to coughing/gasping, so I don't know if others have said anything. I am willing to bet that she has GERD or acid reflux because I have it and my main symptom is a tickle in my throat that makes me cough. It took a long time for doctors to find out that I had it because I don't get heartburn. But if anyone reading this does have a problem with a chronic cough or need to clear their throat that is worse after meals, worse after drinking pop, worse in the evening, I really encourage them to get tested for GERD. I am now on antacids and I am a lot more comfortable (and I imagine so are the people around me!)

There are other things, but I just have to grit my teeth and bear it.
