A diagnosis is not necessarily the best way to go. I only found out after the fact that had I actually tested positive for AS, I would have lost a great deal of my health care coverage. No wonder the HMO was so willing to pay for the screening. They never pay for screenings for anything they cover. A diagnosis affords certain protections and accomodations under the ADA, but there are few protactions and accomodations that actually help. Your own understanding and the understanding of your employer seem to help the most.

A therapist with experience in aspergers might be the way to go, but then, they think they already know. A good therapist with no experience with aspergers can be just as good, if not better, because they have an open mind. You'll learn about aspergers from us and teach it to them. You may have to do a little shopping, visit a few different therapists, before you find one you feel you can develop a rapport with.
