Just imagine scientists invented a revolutionary serum. It could completely re-wire your brain and rewrite your genetic coding to turn you NT. Would you volunteer for the experiment and drink it?

No, I wouldn't. I don't think I would be the same person if I didn't have AS.

Everyone wants to be different to how they are.

No, I don't think it is wrong to fantasise about it. I just wouldn't want to be an NT, not because there is anything wrong with being an NT (I find it irritating when people go all anti-NT it just makes them seem bitter and just as predjudiced as the people that bully us) but because that's not who I am.

I have this vision of downing it and dying, with someone else moving in when I'm forced out.

The questions surrounding Autism are questions about the nature of life and the human condition itself, impervious to the probing of all. The problems at the moment are created by the assmption that Autism is defined by behaviours which some claim to be involuntary when they have no means of determining that.

Many who are gentically Deaf and pass this on to their children opt out of giving their children implants at a young age which would give them enough hearing to use speech; it very much places deafness in a catagory of inferiority to do so.

Hell no I don't want to drink it. I've never understood why I'd want to be anyone else (my pain not withstanding), and "rewiring" on that scale would make me somebody else.

Now if somebody gave me a rosetta stone to decode all those things that happen oustide my awareness and prompted me to act and respond correctly to other people (at least superficially), I'd like that.

I don't need "cured", I need a d*mn field guide.

I'm ashamed to say that right now, I would. When I first came to this site I felt full of pride at having AS. When I went to the UK meetup and got to know the people on this site, I really felt part of a community, and happy to be who I was. But now for some reason I just want the chance to be normal, just to see what it's like and if its easier.

Absolutely not.
I don't want to be someone else, which is who I'd be if my genetics were rewired.
I prefer the "field guide" suggestion.

I would destroy the serum and the research. AS must spread or else neurodiversity is screwed. The greater the minority, the more people will have to wake up and accept us.

I don't honestly know how I would answer that. I would like to become more NT, but I do enjoy many of the gifts from AS.

A field guide would be good, IMO.

I don't have any AS gifts though. I don't have any amazing technical knowledge or genius skill in a subject like others here. And everything I am good at, I know NTs who are better at it than me. I apologise for the downbeat mood today, but sometimes when I'm here I feel like I'm crap at being an NT and crap at being an Aspie.

Then be who you are.

That's because no one has ever experienced an Autistic-friendly enviroment or had an education based on Autistic strengths(they are still poorly identified when described as calender-calculating and such).

There is something I've learned in my life that some people grasp and others don''t, that is the assumption(and it is an assumption) that Autism causes problems. People point to the lack of problems in non-Autistics as proof of this, but it's a fallacy, an insubstantial case for idiocy to claim greatness. Look at it this way:

To say that Autism is the root of problems even in those described as the most debilitated is akin to saying "the law causes crime because if there were no law nothing would be illegal, ergo no crime" .

When people begin pointing out the common problems associated with Autism(and the big word is 'Associated', which implies a percieved connection not a definitive and unchallengable one) and cite it as an excuse for how Autistics are treated, they are ignoring every common cause: it gives them an excuse not to address the real causes of problems and the needs of people. In the UK we are a bit more progressive on Autism than Canada, the US and other countries because some parents got sick of going to their doctor about their children's co-morbid problems and the reason for getting no help was 'this is common in Autism' .

So they dealt with the problems themselves and noticed huge improvements whilst at the same time recognising that their children were not less Autistic after realising that other children could tell even when there were no evident problems. Autism is far too complex to be viewed in the simplistic realms of Pros and Cons, with the spectrum model acting as a measure of these.
