I'm applying for a small art exhibition and I need to include an artist statement. The subjects and process for my art are pretty closely tied up with my autism, and I think that's important to include, but since I still don't have my diagnosis I feel strange writing about it.

I wish the waiting list wasn't so long in my area, I still have over two years to go

I'd suggest writing your statement in one of two ways -

1) Admit you are self-suspecting rather than diagnosed and write about the frustration you feel waiting for assessment.

You could tie it in with the fact autistic adults have a hard time being diagnosed, and finding proper supports.

2) Don't label it as autism but discuss the individual traits you experience, like sensory dysregulation.

Can I ask roughly where you are in Canada?
Two years seems an exceptionally long wait.
Is that because of backlogs during Covid?

I only waited about four months, but that was five years ago so I realise availability may have changed.

That's a good idea, I'll include that

I live in Alberta. The wait was originally 5 years, I'm halfway through it. When I told the doctor who referred me, he didn't believe me that the wait could be so long, but I double-checked. I think covid must have had something to do with it

Oh my goodness! That's CRAZY! I'm sorry you're stuck in that quagmire!
Who's doing your assessment, like what type of doctor is required?

I got mine done through the psychology department of my former Uni.
They referred me to a Neuropsychologist who specialised in adults.

I wonder if you might be able to enquire of U Calgary or U Alberta?

I can't remember, I just know that it's at an adult autism clinic in my city and that the person on the phone who did my screening didn't seem to think there were many other options aside from going to a private clinic (which I don't have the money for anyway).

Waiting so long has been stressing me out, I keep second guessing myself and fixating on it. My partner thinks it's basically a sure thing but I don't feel comfortable with self-diagnosis, I want to know for sure.

Do you think UofA would do it even though I never studied there?

I can't say for sure, but chances are they can at least put you in touch with relevant departments to ask. Then those people might have connections to research studies or other professionals in the field. I don't think it would matter that you didn't attend. The issue might just be cost, again.

It's so frustrating that these aren't covered on provincial insurance because they aren't medical doctors. Mind you, the wait for a psychiatrist is several years here, so I'm glad we don't need to rely on them either.
