For the first 16 years of my life I was completely and utterly obsessed with dogs. I know now that this was a symptom of my autism, but at the time I just thought it was how I was, how everyone was.

I used to be super active on a website called Dogster, and would have frequent discussions with other dog enthusiasts.

From the time I was about 12 or 13 onwards, I wanted to become a dog breeder. I read lots of material on it, I discussed it with the other dog people and breeders themselves, I also challenged (rather loudly) casual breeders to think more deeply about their (bad) choices.

Then sometime after I turned 16, the whirlwind of thoughts about dogs just..... stopped. My world opened up and I gained other interests. My parents called my previous obsession "tunnel vision".

I stilled wanted to be a breeder, but my heart was no longer in it to the same degree. My passion died and I gradually opted out of taking the steps needed to become a breeder.

So here I am now, working at a grocery store.

It happens.

There was a significant portion of my life where all I wanted was to be a pilot, but it's been a long time since I've had even the slightest interest in flying in any context.

I suspect that if I was forced to do something a was passionate about to earn a living, I would quickly lose all of the joy I ever had in doing it...whatever the interest happened to be. It just becomes a drudge.

My housemate used to love all things to do with computers until she got a job at a mining company as tech support. That job ended after a long while and now she grudgingly helps me with my computer issues. She's just not into computers anymore and will never again seek a job where computers are involved.
