Ex-Astronaut To Pursue Insanity Defense

The best part...

Quote:
Nowak suffered from major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, insomnia and "brief psychotic disorder with marked stressors," defense attorney Donald Lykkebak wrote. He said the already-petite woman had also recently lost 15 percent of her body weight and struggled with "marital separation."

In the court document, Lykkebak also indicates that Nowak may suffer from Asperger's Disorder.

More negative publicity for people like us.

Ok, now I am pissed. After all those movies, and documentaries that have tried to show us as good hard working people (like that movie Mozart and the Wale), now that crazy, um, woman, is going to claim an innocent syndrome as a disorder!?

I want to go to that court room and slap her silly..

Sarcasm intended

It's a shame we can't all get together and send them an "Amicus curiae" brief telling them how STUPID it is! AS people are NOT insane and even if social problems and empathy problems caused one to be tempted, logic would kick in and they wouldn't. EVEN if all that failed, AS isn't insanity, and doesn't forgive this.

Frankly, she is just an IDIOT! And have you SEEN the before and after pictures? It is ASTOUNDING how old and ugly she has become.

it doesn't surprise me.... I mean we live in a society where people ***INSIST*** being dishonest, self centered, mechanical, greedy, hypocritical, immature, and dysfunctional are considered "normal". Seeing as there are probably more aspies out there who are above this crap, and those like myself who are very forward to calling people on their bs, it pisses alot of people off, "how dare them act rational and tell me I'm misbehaving". I'm not saying all aspies are good, or that all NTs are bad, this is just a statistical observation. This is why theyr incapable of seeing autism as anything but a "syndrome" or a "disorder", or a "disease".
Aspies like Cho Sung Wei (and I'm not defending what he did, because his actions were wrong and misguided), he was pushed and pushed and pushed until he snapped, the media used it as a vessel to try and launch a witch hunt, hell if you've seen geraldo you'd know.
Lesson kids, act like a lying, selfish, backstabbing, robotic, low thought, hypocritical, immature sociopath, because positive values and character traits are "evil".

It's not just with aspies, aggression against aspies is a mixture of our society's overblown ableism and anti-intellectualism.

At least there are a couple on the comments that defend AS... the first wasn't to the degree it should have been, the person claiming she couldn't function as an astronaut being clumsy and having motor delays, but hey, at least it was a defense of some sort, lol. The others are a bit better.

Aspergistan, Autland, Aspergia, Asperia

What's your favorite name?

Heres a few quotes from the comments, some funny others not so much.

"Asperger''s Disorder?
it will be very difficult to proove that when she was intelligent enough to be in the space program."

"Aspergers falls on the autism spectrum. People with Aspergers are those geeks that end up writing a software program that revolutionizes an entire industry or break the DNA code that leads to a cure for AIDS. They are brilliant but have difficulty with simple social graces. Socially ret*d but with IQs that stagger."

"What woman hasn''t gone bug-*** when some other chic tries to move in on her man, but to the lengths this woman went to?"

"If she suffers from that ,it stands to reason, that the military messed up or it is just something the lawyer dug up to save her asre. I am a layperson."

"this is the worse hairstyle i''ve seen in a long time. very ''old-timey'', not smart and youthful at all. lisa, please, put down the diapers and pick up the scissors."

It's annoying, but not as bad as a celebrity who recently put swearing at a cop down to having Tourette syndrome. She had no tics whatsoever and swearing is not a huge part of the condition. Also, is this the lady who is said to have worn a nappy or something... ?

She may have AS, but that hardly explains her actions. I'm guessing any expert ASD witness for the defense can destroy any chances of her using it well as a defense, it'll be other mental problems that'll play a larger part.

I'm getting the impression Aspies have an exaggerated moral code, or sense of right and wrong... this would *definately* exclude her from our 1st-class section of the Aspie Lounge. ;)

RIGHT As an AS sufferer I often see things as right or wrong then always try to do the right thing. This doesn't include driving thousands of miles in a diaper to kill someone 8O

I wonder what AS signs she shows.

well, I doubt she shows any honestly. I was watching Court TV and they brought up this list-it's got about 10 things on it now, and it sounds like she is STILL adding things to it. OCD, social problems (yes, they separated it from AS on the list), and some others that sounded like skitzophrenia if they were all rolled up into one thing. But, the other lawyers are able to counter this by coming up with someone to check her out and all...

They sounded like she'd JUST been diagnosed with it... very VERY recently, because they were talking about how odd it was that it is normally diagnosed in children. That just leads me to believe it's a pathetic attempt at an excuse along with all of the other things.

It's sad how many have no clue about anything that has to do with autism. They actually mentioned that if the prosecutor's professional says that these things were all just a fleeting moment where she lost her head, and that all of these things are under control, that she might get rid of the ankle bracelet. I guess I'm annoyed that they said it was so odd she was diagnosed since it's diagnosed in children commonly... I mean, it's a lifelong condition, it's not really that far fetched that it would be overlooked when she was a child, and it isn't something that would just be gone all of a sudden as they make it sound.

I do wonder if she ever had violent behaviors in the past, as my ex's son could be very very aggressive at times when he wasn't getting his way, and he would go out of his way to hit or kick someone at times (he was lfa). But it doesn't make sense that this would happen all of a sudden, and geez, just HEARING about all of the things she did and what all she gathered together makes me feel overwhelmed. I cannot imagine someone with AS actually following through with something that awful, or making it beyond preparation. It would be exhausting, overstimulating most likely, and I just imagine myself becoming numb after a certain point and getting over it, lol. I have no clue how this is a valid point in anything for them, but maybe they should be putting more focus on the things that make her sound like she might be skitzophrenic or possibly just narcissistic.
