Is it worth getting a second opinion?

I am seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety, OCD, and a bit of agoraphobia. Today I asked her about AS, and she said no. Actually, she laughed. She says my current diagnosis explains my symptoms.
I had my hopes up, because I thought asperger’s really fit, and I was relieved to finally have an explanation for how I feel. But if I’m not, then I’m not.
However, she said some things that make me doubt either her or everything else I’ve read about AS. Here’s what she said, (after laughing out loud.)
“You don’t have AS. That’s diagnosed in childhood. You would have known it by now. Most people with AS have to be institutionalized. Go to the state hospital. THERE you will see people with AS. They have REAL trouble. Is that what you would like? Are you looking to have trouble? Do you want to be institutionalized?”

I’ll admit I was rather shocked by this, but I played nice, took the prescription for my Zoloft, and went merrily on my way. She’s really not a bad lady.

Nothing I have read so far indicates anyone in this site is posting from a government hospital. So I tend to doubt her knowledge of this particular disorder. I’m thinking about getting a second opinion.

BTW, I took the online “Aspie-quiz”. My aspie score was 144/200, and neurotypical was 60/200. (I got a 0.9 in ‘social’. Wow, am I inept!)

This woman is exceedingly uninformed. If at all possible, see someone else.

Getting a second opinion on a diagnosis that you have a problem with is a wise idea. I remember telling a doctor at 13 I was tired all the time he smugly said "get more sleep". Ten years later another doctor determine I had hypothyroidism.

Ummm, this woman sounds extremely ignorant. Did she even ask for the reasons why you think that you may have AS, or did she just say 'No' immediately to your inquiry? And laughing at you is very disrespectful and unprofessional. Definitely seek help elsewhere if at all possible.
