How does one get a proper and reliable diagnosis? Is it something that's self-diagnosed? Does a cheap and easy diagnosis exist?

Apparently a cheap and easy diagnosis exists, but they only want psychiatrists to administer it. That means the cost can be much higher. Oh well, even that test is subjective and not fully complete, so a GOOD psychiatrist will wade through everything else. MAYBE someone here can recommend some good doctors.

I suggest that you try the Baron-Cohen Autism Quotient test (multiple choice, Do-It-Yourself quiz): http://www.aspergerinfo.org/wiredaqtest.htm

If you want or need an official diagnosis, the OASIS website lists several qualified clinicians by state/teritory in the US and Canada: http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/

"Apparently a cheap and easy diagnosis exists, but they only want psychiatrists to administer it."

Would you care to elaborate? Who are "they?" How is it "apparent?" What kind of test is this, medical, statistical, etc.? Actually, what does an "official" diagnosis consist of currently?

Personally, I'm wondering how much more indepth a diagnosis from a doctor is compared to some of the better ones online. Thanks.

also, do people who've been diagnosed find it helpful at all? It sounds like it might be useful at work so you're not put in situations which you just won't ever be able to cope with. But the process of getting one could be stressful.

I heard about the tests from some on here that have taken it. At the moment I forget the names, but they were both created by the same doctor. The THEY is the medical community. I actually tried to buy it.(It asked for licenses, approval, etc... so I couldn't) It comes with 10 tests, to test 10 people. From what people here have said, and how the sales material was worded, it is probably just a written test and may not be different from RDOS's. IDEALLY, a doctor will KNOW what contstitutes a stim, normal actions/reactions/rest, and ask the right questions about history to VALIDATE the test.

We agree though, and I implied earlier, that whoever makes an assessment should KNOW what they are talking about. It seems most DON'T! So what else is new. 8-(
