Went to my first psych appointment and her first suggestion was hospitalization. I was scared s**tless, but now i find it kind of funny. She said that i definitely seem to fall within the spectrum, but its hard for her to say at this moment. If my gf gets a job and cant be with me all the time to the hospital I go.

im on depekote as of today, too. Hasnt been to . . . bad.

Well folks? :?:

I have trouble comunicating out lout, especially lately. And I think being in a first interview with someone i didnt know didnt help matters. I was nerveous, sometimes angry and I just wanted to go. I answered a few questions, tried to talk about slinkies for a bit, to make it more comfortable. Between that and the unidentified seizures, and how my gf described my meltdowns, my gf thinks the dr spooked.

Why does the pdoc (psychiatrist) want you in the hospital? Are you self injuring or threatening to commit suicide?

I'm sorry that you're having such a hard time right now. I hope you feel better soon!! ! And remember, if you do have to go to the hospital, it might be a positive experience. You might ask some questions about the hospital he/she wants you to go to. Like it's reputation for patient care, etc.

Who put you on Depakote? Were you put on it for bipolar or seizures?

P.S. how old are you?

im 24 was put on depakote for bi polar (and threat of epilepsy cause ive been having stress seizures) im not really self-injuring and my utter dislike of pain skims out the idea of me wanting to suicide. She thinks that i need 24/7 care and to be observed but i dont want to. im going through state mental health meaning it would be state hospital . . those usually arent good. :?

Depakote might be it, they want your blood levels at a certain point and usually do blood tests everyday being in the hospital would be easiest way for them to do that.

i wouldnt want to be hospitalized unless it was real ugly, losing touch with reality, or physically abusing other people. its just like prison withought the guns and electric chair. no freedom whatsoever

Well yeah, if you're suicidal then you need to be safe. Do you have anyone that is helping you at home with this right now? Someone to keep careful watch of you? Hopefully the Depakote will do its job quickly so you can get past the suicidal ideation.

I've heard from different people that some state hospitals are actually nice. I wish you much peace and I want you to know that things are going to get better. Don't give up!

Depends on how you look at it. It could be a safe place, where you can get patched up! Good luck with whatever happens!

I couldn't think of a less safe place than being hospitalised. That is a personal but it would make me feel worse for sure.

Ive worked in various UK mental wards, and whilst i wouldnt say all of them are particularly dangerous they can certainly be completely innapropriate places for autistics, especially in the midst of a breakdown where you need understanding and personal space etc. Perhaps outside the UK the staff might be a little bit more enlightened (i have no idea), but the way you could potentially be interpreted and treated over here... *shudders* doesnt bear thinking about.

The thing is, understand that from a doctors POV hospitalising people is seen as diagnostically useful and efficient as it makes their job of observing you much easier. They may not understand or empathize with how it feels from your POV, and how your unique differences might possibly result in extreme behaviour and mental states, which would not occur outside of that environment. It might be useful to point this out, or even get an experienced advocate to accompany you to assessments to help get this point across.

Also bear in mind that whilst you may enter a hospital voluntarily (perhaps under some sort of informal 'contract'), once your in there if things get out of hand they can potentially take away your freedom. Then everything changes.

Sorry to sound alarmist. I dont even know where you live - maybe hospital would be a welcoming place where you make lots of new friends. But i think whatever you decide its good to second guess these things and be mentally prepared for all eventualities.

Interestingly enough.. the pressure of being pinned down works for me during a meltdown. I have to be stopped from pushing my eyes into my head and hitting my head in general. I just need pressure and to use up all that energy resisting it. I guess that's the only way I can really explain it. Might not make sense, but meh.

sinsboldly, to be fair, I've also heard horror stories. That is why I suggested she try to find out more information on the particular place that her dr wants to send her to.
