Yes, our own friendly site here. There was an ad of a girl spitting out a pill, annoying and distracting. Then there's this ad of a boy jumping up and down, also distracting.

I think even to a 'normal' person (no such person exists of course!) these ads would be distracting. But to those of us on the spectrum who like to focus and concentrate intensely, I think these are particularly distracting!

Your thoughts please.

You're not the first one to complain. You need an adbloker - take a look at this thread - link.

I'm sure Alex can look into replacing them with something more suitable. I use Ad-Block too so I can't really see them, but I know what you mean nonetheless. I don't see why it can't just be the generic "Ads by Google" box.

AdBlock is incredible.

I realize advertising is sometimes the only way to make money on the net but it makes the internet much more enjoyable when you get rid of all of that.

I think the ads are pre-cached anyway, so even if we don't see them, the revenue still is sent through. I could be wrong though but I'm pretty sure the sites that block access if you use Adblock just want to shove the ads in your face.

It wouldn't be such a big deal if the ads just stayed still.

I agree. The movable ads are very distracting. At one point I couldn't even pay attention to the forums because of the boy jumping up and down.

Is that irony, stupidity, or brilliant advertising?

I browse with Flash disabled, so I rarely see any moving content. I enable Flash when I want to watch YouTube or other videos, and I frequently get a shock when I see how cluttered, distracting and annoying the web is with adverts displayed.

(An alternative to AdBlocker is to edit your /etc/hosts file to redirect unwanted content to 0.0.0.0, including invasives like Google Urchin Tracker and any sites that slow your browsing).

If you want to go the whole hog, you can browse in text-only mode with something like Lynx, and it is so effective that the iPhone (also Flash-free) has an "article" mode that gives you just the text of a page.

So a boy happily jumping on a trampoline is a "problem"?

It is in a school environment where staying in your seat is elevated to the highest virtue!

These days I'm using library computers for most of my Internet surfing and conversing, both a public library and a university library. Looking at both "View" and "Tools," I do not specifically see Flash. I do see other things that might get me to it.

I'm reasonable conversant with computers and am willing to be a good citizen. Sure, of course, I'll make an effort to change it back. The public library computer shuts down and restarts after every user in any case, plus a lot of stuff is disabled. The university computer is more open.

On my Firefox it is under Tools -> Addons -> Shockwave Flash -> (Enable / Disable).

There are alternative instructions here:
