Has anyone else found that they lack the self-awareness (or awareness of others) to be embarrassed in some social situations that NT's would be embarrassed in? This is not to say I never feel embarrassed but I'm more willing to make an idiot of myself in public than a lot of people I know. ((For example, someone says "drop dead" and I collapse dramatically.)) I also have no problem with public speaking. I'm not really good at it but it doesn't bother me to do it.

Just curious. :D

Yes, that is true. Actions speak louder than words, and one bad thing can hurt someone's feelings tremendously.

Yesterday I rode my bike to St. Louis Bread Co. because my brother had taken the car to go on a date all day. I was a little embarrassed to do that; actually I was very embarrassed. Another thing that made it worse was, since I went alone, I had no one to look at and talk to, so I was looking around the restaurant, watching people.

Most of my life, I have been extremely shy and inhibited; I did not like that state of being at all. Now I'm trying to bite the bullet and enjoy life without concerning myself with the chance that other people who I probably don't even know will find me weird, foolish, or immature for some of the things I do. I just want to be happy and have fun for a change! I want to have a zest for life: If it's harmless and fun or practical, do it! With our penchant for following rules and procedures, we aspies run the risk of following the social customs we do understand too literally and run the risk of being boring and ultra-normal.

At other times, though, I have been completely unembarrassed by things that should embarrass me. Until I was far too old, I would throw fits at stores while my mom was shopping because I was bored and wanted to go home. Asperger's syndrome can create some really odd contradictions.

What?! I'm fat?! Really now, I never knew that... so? I'm not embarassingly fat, but I'm not in shape either. Some people find that embarassing, I don't.

Hmm... what else? Oh! I say inappropiate things all the time at school. I actually tried to start a conversation about fetishes once. It kind of worked, no one was really on board with the idea. I'm loud at places where I shouldn't be. I yelled at an airport trying to get my brother's attention this morning. I got some looks, but I really didn't care. I can't think of anything else right now.

Yes.

I get embarassed very easily, but some things NT's get embarassed at don't phase me at all.

I have no hesitation talking about intimate or "private" things. Though my mother hates this when I happen to talk about her intimate or private things. Though with some subjects, I really don't understand what's to be so embarrassed about.

you TRIED? sounds just like me, only i seem to actually HAVE these conversations, mainly cos everyone expects me to be shocking and outrageous, and i've been told my behaviour is so eccentric that it puts people at their ease, cos i won't judge them (actually, i judge them all the time, but have the wisdom to keep my gob shut). people have also said what a relief it is, to be ABLE to talk about such things - you'd be surprised at the number of "embarrassing" conversations i've started, which everyone's joined in with: "i've always thought that, but never said it before". must be more healthy, surely?

it also means that loads of people talk to me about very personal things, cos they know i won't be shocked. (believe me - i have to fight people off wth a stick - completely random strangers come up to me in the street and tell me their problems, all the time. my friends are always suitably astonished).

so, i don't get embarrassed talking about sex, menstruation, and other issues which tend to be whispered about. seems to me the world would be less hung up if such issues WERE discussed more openly, cos then we could get rid of all the sleazy associations, as it's usually only the sleazy gobshites who do talk about them. let's hear it from the sensible people.
