Saw it a while back. To the degree that I could just sit back and enjoy the film, I thought it was a good story.

The two main characters are plausible AS personalities, but I don't think watching that movie alone will help most people completely understand the varieties of different AS personalties. It is a start, though.

I could relate to both the main characters, but neither one was me. I saw some elements of me in the guy, some elements of the girl. I have some behaviors that neither of them has, and I lack some traits that they displayed.

So I am glad that some people will see it and better understand AS, but I am also kinda worried that some one might see it, and assume that I will behave just like the people in the movie did.

We watched it (hubby and I) with our 16 year old NT daughter. She enjoyed the movie, and I think gained some perspective on some of her 11 year old AS brother's challenges. I was very pleased with the movie, even if in some ways it was somewhat outrageous and hollywood-ized.

my apologies:)

I had no idea...

well, that said...

We found that the AS displayed appeared more like high functioning Autism with characteristics of AS displayed throughout. But I guess now knowing that Jerry himself does have AS, we understand that it is all individual and is all in how each of us interpret/experience AS...

We could definitely identify and it made us laugh/near cry at times, but we, personally do not know AS to look like that...

Was an interesting insight to life with Autism as an adult, though:)

Just in case you didn't see it... there's another post about this movie.

Likely if you did a more through search, this is likely somewhere in the 5-10th post about it over the past few years.

I have seen the movie and enjoyed it for one reason, SPOKANE!! !! !

I thought it was a good movie and it shows everyone with AS is effected differently by it and they are all different people, not all the same and it shows how everyone is effected differently on the autism spectrum too. I find it a shame for those who saw the movie and thought it wasn't a good movie, didn't see that.

I have seen the movie & could just sit back for what it is.
I could not see myself in either Donald nor Isabelle but this movie helped me understand my AS much better.
It's a shame this went straight to DVD.

Exactly my thoughts. I couldn't really relate to the movie. At all, actually.

The directors I think took a LOT of liberty with the characters. I know Mary and Jerry and I don't think they are much like the movie characters at all. But then again how we see people is not always how they are I suppose. I don't relate at all to the movie.

Fairly certain that the search function was not an option when I thought to post this subject. Said "Keyword search takes up a lot of resources and is temporarily disabled to prevent the site from becoming unresponsive during peak times "....otherwise I might have commented on a previous thread.

This is how I felt about the movie as well.

I rented it over the Christmas holidays after reading something about it here. Back before I joined up here. I saw some familiar AS traits that I can relate in myself but on a milder scale. To me the AS traits portrayed in the movie seemed too stereotypical. I guess it would have been boring for some people if the characters weren't so afflicted.
A TV series about someone with AS might be better. That way there’s more time to work with in building a more average AS character. If there is such a thing as an average AS person.

seems i remember reading in one of my Tony Attwood books that the main characters i.e. the "aliens" in the show 3rd Rock From The Sun are likened to having Asperger's. i myself never paid full attention to it, but why not.

as for Mozart and Teh Whale....it's cute and feels like a made for tv movie with a happy ending, but i still enjoy studying the characters' traits.

I loved Mozart and the Whale. I can relate a lot to the Donald Morton character. While I am not in the least a math savant (in fact, I am dyscalculic), I could relate with the character in general. I love politics and the flashback scene with the classmates asking him mathematical questions was for me questions on politics. I was often queried with questions like "Who was the 10th president?" "Who is the governor of ...", etc.
