Well, I am transferring to a new university for the Fall 2005 semester (mainly, money and being socially frustrated at the old one). The bad thing is I have two roommates in my dorm room, and sometimes I like my privacy. The good thing is one of my two new roommates seems like an aspie. I gave him a call today to find out if either of them was bringing an air conditioning unit and who was going to rent the microwave/refrigerator combination. Apparently, they were planning to forego the air conditioner. Back to the point, my new roommate is a computer science major like me (clue No. 1); and he talks in a voice that is even flatter and more monotone than even mine! He also began talking before I'd finished talking a couple of times (possibly because the long-distance made my voice fainter, who knows), but that's another sign! He also spoke at some length about the factual details of the computer science program at this university (a third sign!).

I didn't bring up the topic of Asperger's syndrome or autism while talking to him; but he could be an undiagnosed case, for all we know!

While no one could guess at this point, it does seem like your roommate would be more understanding of any oddities/idiosyncrasies/problems that AS could present in social interactions if he has traits resembling those on the spectrum like the ones you mentioned (focusing on a specific topic, etc.) although it may happen to just be a combination of other factors, and not autistic-like traits per se.

In any event, I wish the best for the success of your new living arrangements.

Even if he doesn't actually have AS, he seems like the kind of person you could get on well with, which is the most important thing.

First of all, does the fact that he was so indecisive about the air conditioner give you a clue that he has AS?

Also, the fact that he talks in a monotone voice, the fact that he interrupts a lot, and the fact that he speaks in great detail about the computer science program leads me to believe he is an aspie for sure.

But, I could be wrong. Regardless, I hope you get along well with him.
