I just got it and can't put it down. Just wondering what anyone's thoughts were on it.

It's an autobiography by an aspie named John Elder Robison. His brother wrote Running With Scissors.
It just came out.

I really like it because he and my husband had a lot of things in common- he was also a mechanic, his father was also an alcoholic, and his mother thought there were hidden messages in sign posts.

Plus his son was an aspie, as well, which I think my son will eventually be diagnosed with when he gets a little older.

I only have one more chapter to go, but I like how he was able to find so many opportunities to use his special abilities. Plus he is happily married, and his son is doing well in school. It gives me a little hope for our family.

Nice, hmm, i have to go look that up.

I've got a "hold" on it (reserved) at library, just waiting for them to phone & say it's arrived (since it was 'on order'). Am greatly looking forward to finally reading the book, after hearing so much about it beforehand.
Author has reading at a bookstore Thursday night (tomorrow) & his website says he'll be going to this weekend's ASD conference in Boston (which I'm attending, also-though I expect oodles of people will be there). According to list on his site, author scheduled to have segment on NBC's Weekend Today this Saturday, and be guest on Diane Rehm show (on NPR) Tuesday morning (Oct. 2). He's signed up as member on WP & has 5 posts (I didn't know until I found his thread in 'Getting to know each other' by accident)-so I dunno' if he checks back here at all.

Come on, people. Anyone else? I am almost done with the book and would love to hear anyone else's comments from the male perspective.

Well, the two independent booksellers in Arcata didn't have any copies.
I ordered the book from Northtown Books which is a really great bookstore... if you're ever in the area...

They said it should arrive by Friday!
So... do I try to read all the other books I bought recently or drop them and read this one when it comes in?

I shall have a look for this as I have read Running With Scissors sometime ago and loved it.

I will be ordering a copy from amazon soon. From what I've seen so far there are some childhood experiences of his I can relate to very well. The title of the book itself brings back some unpleasant memories.

I do check in here, but I don't post a whole lot as I've been so busy. I hope you like my story and find some inspiration in it. One of my goals is to raise awareness of Asperger's and diversity in general. I'll be on Weekend Today tomorrow (Sunday) and they'll be webcasting it after it airs.

Also . . . Barnes & Noble taped my entire opening night - reading and question/answer at Union Square, NY, and they will be running that on their website starting Oct 2nd.

I'm halfway through your book right now, just taking a break to check in here!

I thought every bookstore in Humboldt County would have your book the first day it was out... sorry to say I couldn't find it in two stores I thought would have it. The Barnes & Nobles (or whichever big one we have here) probably had it, but I ordered it from a local store and picked it up Friday.

I find your writing easy to read. What I mean is, I find the topic interesting and laid out in a way that flows right for me.

While I do not claim to have Asperger's (I do have diagnosed ADHD), I have found here a community in which I am very comfortable... at least online.

I hope your book gains wider readership than other books out there on the subject of AS.
I really appreciate your comment that... "Asperger's is not a disease. It's a way of being. There is no cure, nor is there a need for one. There is, however, a need for knowledge and adaptation on the part of Aspergian kids and their families and friends." This is from the prologue for those who have not gotten the book yet.
I would only add, "... and society." to the end of that comment.

I'm looking forward to the second half of the book, which should be finished tonight or tomorrow... glad I have the weekend off from work!

Well, I finished the book a day or so ago.

This is a really well written book! I truly appreciate John Robison putting all his personal life (well, most of it perhaps? ) out there for us all to see.

I'm sure I'll read this one over again.
Now I'm planning on getting his brother's book, "Running With Scissors".

I really wish I could buy copies for everyone here... let's see... 13,793 copies (at least four folks here seem to have one or will soon) times $25.95 equals $357,928.35!

What's "Running with Scissors" about?

Regarding the title:
A company I worked for once hired a speaker to come motivate everyone. After discussing the importance of eye contact, she announced that she had made eye contact with everyone in the room except me. Then she told me I needed to work on it.
Of course, back then I had never even heard of Asperger's. I wish I had, and I wish I had told her to look it up. Sensitivity training should include AS awareness.
Sorry if this is slightly off-topic.

I am currently reading "Look Me In the Eye". I am having a hard time putting it down long enough to acknowledge my family. This morning I woke up with a nasty virus of some sort and was actually happy about it. It means I can sit here all day and read the rest of your book!
