Today I get mad at my nt bf for lieing about falling asleep to me, i said if you close your eyes for longer then 10 seconds its not blinking, its starting to dose off... He replies as im very upset, "Ok how about after 9 seconds, wake me up, everything will be fine!" then i get upset and he says im joking... Does that sound like a joke or more of a nasty sarcastic comment?

I dont understand most jokes at all if that is a joke, and it drives me nuts...

Does anybody else understand jokes good or is it just me?

beau99,

That is NASTY! 8O

Age1600,

10 seconds ISN'T blinking, but you sound like you think a little too much like a woman. That is certainly not an insult, but men know they have to be careful what they say, etc... ESPECIALLY around women! There have been times where I wanted to close my eyes for a time, and sometimes I DO! Maybe they are iritated or tired. Don't ASSUME he is going to sleep, etc....

As for his statement, it might be just playful taunting. YOU can best determine that through patterns and how he treats you. ESPECIALLY if he isn't getting any sex, and treating you to dinner, etc... he will probably be honest with you in such things. There is simply no reason to lie.

You can't get the full answer by simply asking here. AND, if you REALLY want to know, ASK HIM. That is ANOTHER way where women probably have it better in relationships. Women are more likely to be offended if we ask.

Doesn't seem like a joke to me. I can get jokes sometimes. Usually not if another aspie is saying it. and no one ever gets my jokes.

I do get jokes sometimes and sometimes not, or at least ill have to think about it for a moment or too, i tend to get laughed at.

Hmm... well he was being pretty sarcastic, but I understand how it went down, I along with everyone else I know when something similar is said we refer to it as a joke.

Like it will be like a sarcastic joke i guess. I deal with people like your BF all the time so I get the ropes and can dish out some of my own stuff as well. :)

I think he's just trying to be playful and turn an awkward situation into something funny. I don't think he intended to hurt you, rather to cheer you up. But like Zukenkerl said, only he knows his true intention, so it's probably best to clear it up with him.

PS - sometimes I like to close my eyes for long periods of time. Light can be a bit overwhelming at times, so it's nice to rest my eyes by blocking it all out. I remember walking around a wood with my eyes closed recently - so peaceful. So, don't assume he was falling asleep.

Why were you getting mad at him for falling asleep? People fall asleep when they are tired.

Jokes have to be explained to me. If someone made a comment that I couldn't tell if it was a joke or sarcasm, I would ask what they meant, but I wouldn't get mad at them.

I have sometimes some problems with understanding jokes directed towards me because I'm not quite sure if a joke was innocent or sarcastic. My cousin's husband specialised in making such jokes. :x  I have problems with reading sarcastic comments, if such a comment was said in a normal tone of voice, it's very possible I may not catch it.

I was so upset earlier when the system was down. I didn't even know the other post posted.

To answer your OTHER question? Based on my understanding of how things ended up, I may only understand 80% or less of jokes.

I was once in a class with probably a couple dozen others and nobody else reacted to what a teacher said, but I did. He was called onto the carpet for it.(It is odd that I seem to be using idioms more after REALLY coming to believe I have AS. Anyway, he got in trouble for it.) A number of people in the class seemed to figure out that I was the one. I must have been worse than I thought. Anyway, the joke was one of sarcasm.

Still, I'm a man, I think like a man, and I have been in this SAME case. I didn't say I was blinking but, under the circumstance, I might have said that. I really HATE lying, but I also hate senseless persecution also.

In English, there is a saying! "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned". You sound nice though, and I am sure he likes you and wouldn't want to hurt you. Just don't sell yourself short(Be a bit more confident), and try to take it a bit easier on him.

I think it sounds like he was joking & teasing you. It doesn't sound like he was trying to be mean, but he may have been annoyed with your catching him dozing off! Shame on him for that!

It was a joke. It was probably easy to joke about because you were so specific about the time (10 seconds).
