if i have sugar or caffeine i go hyperactive & apparently can be quite unbearable to be around. it affects me more than alcohol does! do certain food stuffs have effects on other aspies? or am i perculiar even for an aspie? i try to not have anything with caffeine in it & restrict the amount of sugar i have but sometimes sugary things are so tempting....

I think everybody just has their own reactions to stuff. Personally, sugar is a depressent, it actually clams me down, and caffine has little effect at all. Alochol, about normal I suppose.

I've never noticed that sugar has much of any affect on me, besides too much may make me feel a little ill due to high blood sugar. I'm seriously addicted to caffeine though.

I had this problem, and I've switched to drinking sugar-free lemonade (Tropicana) and sugar-free Orangeade (also Tropicana). It's very good, as well as sweet, so it nails the sugar craving :)

Maybe that would help?

have you tried actual sugar?

Many people have a hard to detect intolerence for corn and since high fructose corn syrup is used as "sugar" for most everything, people have reactions to it that can include hyperactivity.

Try pure cane sugar and see if it also makes you hyper, (in my experience people I have told to do this do not get the same effect from real sugar). My brother gets crazy on corn syrup, and eventually crashes with a horrid headache, but he could spoon in sugar all day and be fine.

Also artificial sweetners like splenda, aspertame, nutrasweet are all poison and pretty much taste like poison, so don't bother. :D

I stick to wild raw honey as much as i can. Sure, its still sugar and still has the calories, but it tastes so good and its so much easier on my system. I am sensitive to caffeine. Two cups of coffee and i am shaky.

Sugar has never really affected me. Caffeine calms me down and if I drink too much of it(I don't drink soda...but I drink a lot of coffee) it makes me very tired.
Just the other day, my Mom and I were talking and I said I didn't think I would mind working at the Starbucks up the street from my apartment and she said that while everyone else is hyper from too much coffee, I'll be the one falling asleep in the back.

Sugar (pure cane stuff, not that terrible high-fructose corn syrup crap they put in soda nowadays) has never really affected me. Caffeine doesn't either, unless it's in a very high quantity.

Wow. I was going to rail HFCS, but two people have already beaten me to it. I've been called a freak for being suspect of HFCS, but I still am. And once you become aware of it, you quickly become aware of how nearly impossible it is to avoid. It's in just about everything.

I prefer Sugar in the Raw, or honey to sweeten things. I don't really put sugar in much of anything other than coffee/espresso. The signature drink I make on my espresso machine at home is what I call a "raw sugar latte". I've offered them to guests, and they are well received, though I do not know if people like them or are being polite (even though I lecture pretty much everyone about not hurting my feelings and just being honest with me).

But, for all of my talk, I'm drinking a Mountain Dew Game Fuel right now. Second ingredient after water is HFCS of course; and what the hell is brominated vegetable oil anyway, or more to the point, why is it in my soda? 8O I normally avoid soda (it's supplied to us at work, so I need to be careful not to turn into a soda fiend), but this stuff is limited edition (marketed with Halo 3), so I figure I'll have some while it's around. It get's me pumped up a bit, but nothing terribly loopy.

Nicotine gives me a slight buzz and makes me more focused and relaxed (I smoke a pipe in the evenings, occasionally), and alcohol generally makes me more upbeat and pleasant to be around, but it also lowers my already low inhibitions, so I'm apt to say anything after a few beers.

Good fortune,

- Icarus is sweet enough without sugar…

Caffeine makes me tired, too. I usually have to have a Coke to get settled down for bed at night. Sugar...I can od on sugar, but it just makes me feel oozy.

What really gets me is wheat products. My husband thought he was bein cute one night and got me a Subway on wheat bread. I was a b***h for two days. He won't make that mistake again!

Wheat products, hmmm....
I don't really know about that, I don't care for bread and rarely eat it. I haven't noticed a particular effect when I do, but never had any reason to pay attention. I will watch next time I eat Subway. This could be interesting.

Love caffiene, love it to death, though I must admit it has quite the opposite affect on me than it does on most people who've posted. It leads to something I can only describe as an extreme sugar-high, and generally makes me feel infallible (within reason).

Too many carbs makes my anxiety worse. There is a link between sugar metabolism and the serotonin system (via the inositol pathways). My inositol metabolism seems to be messed up. While high-fructose is worse for me, even regular sugar and starches make me feel bad if I eat more than small to moderate amounts.

If you have frequent loose stools, it could be a lactose/fructose intolerance. This creates osmotic conditions in the gut that prevent the absorption of tryptophan. With lower tryptophan comes lower serotonin and melatonin levels, and more anxiety/panic/stimming/depression/OCD/.
