I just thought if I get my misery out now, I will somehow feel purged and cleansed. We are leaving today for Badger Country, where the people speak in those funny Fargo accents and speak veeeerrry ssllooowly. People ask my husband and I to speak slower, b/c they can't understand us.

We are visiting the in-laws. They are very nice people and the environment is understimulating. Aspie heaven? One would think so, but for me, the lack of intellectual/visual stimulation sends me into fits of boredom. Thankfully, our 1 year old is coming with us, so she should keep me busy, but not happy per se.

My step-mother-in-law's relatives drive me up the wall and thoughts of having a fake convulsion, just to liven things up, cross my mind regularly. The first time I visited, my husband fainted, so that broke up the monotony, but I don't know what we are going to do this time.

Wisconsin is flat and boring and I detest going there. I am sure I am offending any Wisconsinites who post here, but I am sorry, the state I come from has huge cities, mountains, deserts and a diverse population. One cannot be expected to think a flat, slow state is fun !?! I feel very sorry for anyone who lives there. It could be the Irish in me, that is annoyed by being surrounded by Swiss/Swedish/German protestants (my step-mother-in-law is a Presbyterian minister by occupation). For G-d's sake, the men-folk do not allow women to play some damn card game, in the local cheese cafe, b/c that is the way it's always been. Give me a freaking break.

When you order food, instead of a side of chips or fries, you get a brick of cheese, even if you order a grilled cheese sandwich. My husband and I are allergic to dairy, so people look at us like we are aliens...."you don't eat cheese?" "No, I can't eat cheese, I will get a sinus infection," "Maybe if you just have a little..." "No, thank you." Then comes the polite-but-not smile.

Ugh. Help me.

Tallgirl.

Wisconsin is actually a very hilly, but not mountainous state. The only really 'boring' parts, IMHO, are the flatlands south of Madison (an extension of the Illinois/Iowa/Indiana flatlands) and US 151/WI 26 between Madison and Oshkosh.

Many parts are actually amazingly scenic, especially the northwoods.

As for food, check out a friday night fish fry at our many bars/restaurants/Legion halls/Eagles halls/etc. Wisconsin is also heavily Catholic and it is an old tradition.

Anyway, how can it so boring here, NFL season is about to start! ;-)

What part of the state are you going to? Perhaps I can allay your fears of our fine state.

Mike

My paternal uncle, aunt, and three cousins live just outside Madison, Wisconsin. It's apparently a pretty progressive state; they are required to have a certain amount of greenspace for every certain amount of development! I also remember Madison being pretty interesting for a mid-sized city. Maybe that's because it's a college town and the state capital.

I live in Wisconsin, and I don't have any problem with it. I live in the southeast corner abouts, in Racine, but I go to Kenosha all the time. And Milwaukee every once and a while. I really kind of like this part of the state, its more developed and not too rural... But then it isn't as fast paced as a large city.

I guess there isn't too much to do, if you are into that sort of thing. But really I spend all my spare time playing video games, and learning about things... and there is plenty of opportunity to learn that sort of thing.

Though I guess I don't really know how the rest of the state is, most is pretty rural... and I probably couldn't stand to live in those parts.

I've personally always wanted to go check out Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

I was there last thurdsay. Do youself a favor and do it with a tour group, and not go to an actual game. The games are for the die-hards only.

As for wisconsin, I grew up right next to and still live right along the shore of lake michigan. The lakeshore is quite the sight to behold.

Interstate 90 between Wisconsin Dells and Houston Co. Minn. is quite a senic drive.

Military ridge and the wisconsin river valley are quite senic too

I haven't seen any hills. I do not eat fish and you will never catch me eating whatever that Scandanavian fish dish is...smells like fart.

I am however south of Madison. I am sorry, but I have travelled all over the country and you cannot convince me that Wisconsin should be a choice destination for travel. The only other state I probably have no desire to visit is Kansas.

They may be progressive environmentally, but it is not a diverse state in comparison to where I come from and other states I have travelled through, besides Montana.

We are coming to the close of day one. The weather is nice and my husband toured the ethanol plant and the curds and whey plant and he is now laying on the bed "resting." I went to the store....

We are only 2 hours from Chicago, which I would love to visit, but that is not on our itinerary, although Milwaukee is...same distance, but no love....:-(

My in-laws are having a hard time with my dairy allergy....hmmm. I will keep you updated. The population of this town is only 10,000, so there might not be much to say.

Thanks for the good vibes vetivert.

Hasta,
Tallgirl.

South of Madison, eh? You are near me. However I don't think I'll have to worry about you visiting what with Whitewater being heavily defended by miles of farmland on everyside and no major highway to cut through it.

This reminds me is the big Wisconsin get together still on?
