My goal, what I would like to eventually be able to do, is to open up a facility or center of sorts for autism. I would not be collecting donations for a cure, but instead, donations to help those who cannot afford assessments, therapies, medications (for anything they might be needed for those of us on the spectrum), etc.

I would like to be a very active advocate and have classes that people can sign up for as well, to learn about autism from those of us who are actually on the spectrum, so that they will not merely be constricted to purely seeing the side of the observer, and they can know what it is like to actually have it instead.

Sounds great. What's first?

It's not unrealistic. There are some people already doing what they can to help people with Asperger's. Some high school teacher in Canada recently argued that having Asperger's doesn't make you less qualified to teach; you can teach other people who have Asperger's better. I think they're starting to look into that now, and she also teaches people with Asperger's.

No clue, lol. 'Tis merely an idea at the moment, as I am still in college and am not working at all right now, lol. But when I get through college and get a job in the field area I'm going for, I suppose I will start putting a little bit back, and over time I might have enough to open something like this, lol.

I agree Angelus-Mortis, that it isn't really unrealistic, that there are others already doing just that. But those groups are few and far between, not easily accessible or openly available to those of us who need them. At least, that's the part I am aware of, lol. I think there is a group maybe like that through our center for autism, but they won't actually just tell me about it, lol. So while they are available, I don't think it's something everyone knows about. I'd like it if our group was well enough off to be able to be made known :) If that makes sense. I would like it to be a large group eventually... maybe something that is available in all areas or something like that.

Now that's just getting into bigger things and bigger ideas, lol, but essentially that is what I'd like to do one day :)

If this ever were to come about, would any of you be interested in helping (not donation wise but time wise)?

Nothing is too big if you set your mind to it. I would suggest breaking it down into smaller chunks if you have as much trouble with the bigger picture as I do.

If you only knew the ideas running through my head, they are GIGANTIC! :D

P.S. I <3 your avatar

lol, thanks (I've had it before, but someone said it was creepy and looked painful or something of that sort, and I started thinking so too, so had to take a break from it, lol), and yes, I have a big problem with the big picture. I just have a huge idea mainly, but need to break it into smaller chunks because if I only focus on the end result, I will get frustrated if it doesn't just magically happen, lol. It isn't that I don't see the end idea, it is that I cannot see it any other way, and can't see the inner workings of what must be done before it could happen.

Normally I don't even see the big picture, lol, but when it does happen, it's difficult to remember that it doesn't happen in one step XD

Part of the problem of breaking it down into smaller steps is I have absolutely no clue where I would even start, lol, or what all would need to be done to make it happen.

Speaking of breaking things into smaller parts... I need to go to the store, which, in itself, consists of about 20 different steps before I walk out of the door between my kiddos and myself, lol.

You never know!! ! I heard a story of a person that REALLY wanted to be famous, and wanted to help people. He wanted to help kids declared hopeless for FREE! He was catholic, and prayed to the saint of lost causes. Well, he became world famous and fulfilled his promise! He even named his organization after the saint. As much a testimony to his pledge as it was a promise to the kids he helped. His name? Well, better yet, here's a link:

I couldn't resist! Maybe YOU could be the autistic, or mental difference, equivalent. I don't think St Judes does ANYTHING with that!

I DID say I liked your earlier avatar. I DO like your current one also as well. I don't know how NTs do it, but I basically browsed all the stores I thought about going to, picked the stores to get what I wanted, and hit them in order. Outside of browsing one of the stores a little, I don't think I had even one step out of place. I planned it out before I even left.

lol, doh-well, in that case, thank you as well :)

lol, yes, here I am, about 20-25 minutes after posting, making a list of meals we'd like to have, what is needed for each of them, etc, lol. While the kids run around, taking off their shoes, putting them back on when I tell them to, taking 'em back off... coats have also been stripped and put back on, lol, while my 6 year old keeps asking "what in the WORLD is taking you so long?" lol! I guess I should have told him what was going on in my mind and what needed to be done before I sat down to plan it all out, so he (and I) would have a more realistic idea of when it is actually going to happen.

I would like to help, but the only problem is that I don't live where you are, so I can't help with that unless it can be done over the Internet.

Count me in.... totally!

I go to an autism center at a university, but it is definitely geared toward children, not adults. We need more stuff for adults. Sometimes, I know more than the counsellors there, and that is not a pleasant feeling.

I totally support your idea. YEA!! ! :D

Try checking out your state's Department of Education or anything that services the Special Education arena. There should be links to training on ASD issues, therapies, and the like. Networking can be done at conferences and seminars to get ideas from like-minded individuals.

You can also check out the Children's Yellow Pages for your state on www.wrightslaw.com

We could figure out something over the internet Angelus, I am sure, as there probably are not many in my area to start with, lol. But it will take a long time I am sure, as I'm progressing through my course stuff 2 classes at a time, lol. So it will be a bit, but it will get done eventually. I'm glad that there are others who would like to participate, that gives me more drive to actually achieve it :)

Thank you for the info MomofTom :) I'll figure out something eventually, but that gives me an idea of what to start with :D

Yes, Sapphowoman, I know what you mean about that. Every time I hear anything about an adult with autism of any form on TV, they follow it by commenting "isn't that only in children?" lol. It's amazing how little they know, but that shows kind of why, I guess, it's mostly geared towards children. I would like to be for adults, children, family members, etc. Just an all around type of thing.

I'm creating groups in my area starting in January, I hope where parents and adult aspies discuss our problems, find out what we can tackle and work together to make it happen. We all have so much in common but don't work together to find solutions.

My son would be nervous and impatient at a group like this so I'm thinking that of ways to make it enjoyable for people like him, and me. I listen best when I'm drawing, something that used to make teachers really mad at me. We also realized that we had more focused discussions when we were working on a jigsaw puzzle.

So I'm thinking that if we provided quiet ways to keep people grouned, like if my son were playing chess or dots while listening, he'd be socializing in an easy way that he'd like, in addition to listening. And have puzzles around and, of course, doodling would be encouraged.

Then we could talk about the things we need to have better lives and go from there.

I think it's a very realistic goal. It may not be an easy one to attain, but it's not impossible. It sounds like a wonderful place :)
