Usually, when I call someone, I have trouble thinking on what to say next to the other person. I will just say something random to avoid the awkward silence, it's really embarrassing, because this happens in real life with me as well. Am I alone in this or is this a common trait? Share?

I'm lost after: Hi, how are you? and Fine, good thanks.
Usually the conversation stalls there.
Usually if you know something about the person and bring it up the conversation can continue for a few more seconds.

If I'm calling, I plan out the first part in advance. I generally plan out the first topic to talk about, which is usually my excuse for calling. I also try to have a list of other topics that I would like to talk about. If the conversation goes well, then I may have to abandon some or all of my plans, but if it goes badly, I'm prepared.

Hey, me either!

On my best days, I'll have something to complain about or a funny little story about something stupid that I did. I am not bothered by making someone laugh at me.. though sometimes I wonder if they are laughing at the story or at the fact that I am revealing this to them in the first place.

On my worst days it seems as if everyone is speaking in a different language.
