I want to thank all of you who posted a reply to my initial post. I have to say I feel a bit overwhelmed in this site, as I have never really met anyone like me. Now there seems to be an entire site of people like me.
I had some helpful advice, and I am carefully considering all of it. I took the Baron-Cohen AQ test, as suggested, and scored a 44. The diagnostics fit like a glove.
I don't feel quite so alone anymore, and will peruse this site more to see if I can find help for any of the things that give me trouble. I also feel like maybe my son does not need to feel the way I have always felt. Thank you so much for your advice.

We AS folks are not known for our social skills, but it does seem as if some of us have no desire to make any effort how or whatsoever. Welcome to WP. I never knew there are so many like me until I found WP. I hope you will feel comfortable here.
