Are you a "proud person" in this sense?
Do you refuse any treatment for psych things related to AS-- shrinks, meds, therapy, special education, whatever?
Do you think there is something wrong with AS and therefore you don't have it?
Do you think that since most people with AS seem to have something wrong with them, you don't have it?
Do you think that since most people think there is something wrong with autism, you don't want them to know that you have it?
Do you think that since most people think those with AS suffer due to it-- anxiety, depression, etc. you don't want them to know, because they'll think you're emotionally pathetic too?
Do you think that there is nothing wrong with AS and therefore you don't need treatment?
I had all of this. At once. During my adolescence. I couldn't explain it.
*I* didn't need cognitive behavioral therapy! I didn't need people to tell me what to do! I had it all figured out, thank you very much! I KNEW what I wanted in life!
I didn't need a diagnosis of anything. I wasn't stupid or crazy! I wasn't ret*d or insane! I'd rather be crazy than ret*d, and the autism seemed to imply retardation-- social retardation. I didn't want people treating me like a social ret*d. Or telling people to go easy on me because I can't stand much!
I wouldn't accept anything for anxiety or depression, not just because I worried that the stuff would make me too complacent or conformist to figure out what I needed to figure out in my head, but alsp because I was too GOOD to need anything. I didn't need it to help me figure it out in my head! I was good enough! (I also worried the stuff would make me worse, or slow me down and make it harder for me to figure things out, or make me depressed if it was a depressant anti-anxiety drug).
I think I'm really lucky that my bizarre upbringing offered me a lot of tools for coping with how different I am, and how different I think. . .
I can't imagine having to deal with all of that. I'm so sorry. . .
Personally, I think the characteristics that define AS tend to group people who think in certain ways. I think that having those thought patterns is not wrong or less; I think that many of the ill emotional side effects have a lot to do with the fact that we live in a very f****d up culture that can't get over it's self. . . Of course if those patterns stop you from doing the things you want or need to do, it's time to find tools to deal with them. . . by and large, though, I think the best "cure" would be a big dose of tolerance and support. . .

Yes
Do you think there is something wrong with AS and therefore you don't have it?
No
Do you think that since most people with AS seem to have something wrong with them, you don't have it?
No, I believe I have it to some extent, and I believe everyone has something wrong with them AS or not
Do you think that since most people think there is something wrong with autism, you don't want them to know that you have it?
I'm not sure if that's reason, but I do try to hide it...

Maybe
Do you think that there is nothing wrong with AS and therefore you don't need treatment?

WOW! I was just like that!
When I was put on anti-depressants I would hide them under my tongue and then spit them out.
Ok... now Im very demented so just to let you know that before I explain:
For me, If I was autistic there was something wrong with me and I deserved to die. I wanted death brought upon myself every-time myself and autism were mentioned in the same breath. But it was perfectly ok for other people to have autism, there was nothing wrong with it.
I refused treatment because my sisters weren't autistic, and I thought I deserved to be normal just like them. It is very hard for me to come to terms with the fact that Im the "defect" of the family. It was god's mistake he should fix it.
When I was little I thought I was different because I was possessed by the devil. And every mention of me not being normal brought extreme rage because I was still a good person and that no matter what I did I would go to hell when I died.
My childhood was very excruciating and I wish SOOOOO much that it would be repressed so I would never have to think about it ever again. All the psychological torture was brought on by myself and that is the epitome of my grief and sadness.

Wow. I've been thinking about this stuff too. Because I've been in denial about things. I DO look at some other people with AS and think "I'm not like them; therefore I don't have it." But that is just denial. I guess I do think of it as a "defect" sometimes. But that is probably because I was made fun of, etc.
As for the therapy, medication, etc.--I do take medication, although I used to be stoic about it and not want to take it. It has helped me be more verbal, and connect my mouth to my brain. It hasn't changed my personality (as far as who I really am)--it has only made me more expressive, so I can be more of the real me.
hell yes im proud of being different!
