Were not the only group to face discrimitation due to our differences.

xeroderma pigmentosum is a genetic disorder where exposure to UV light can kill becasuse the skin lacks the ability to repair itself from damage to exposure of UV light.

I was watching GMA today and they had a story about camp sundown, a summer retreat where people who have this can participate in activities with each other.

They just completed building an indoor swimming pool - reason being that they use go to a public pool at night to swim, but the locals found out who they were and would gather to jeer at them and throw trash into the pool.

How sickening

sadly, i'm not surprised. people always fear things which are strange, unknown and different.

that's why i'm so keen on education, in its broadest sense - things are a lot easier to manage when you know about them, understand them (if if you don't agree with them).

That's messed up. People do fear what they don't understand. I've gone through a lot because of people who think of me as weird. I would never be disrespectful to someone just because they are different from me. I am friends with anyone, as long as they are nice. Differences don't matter to me at all.

it's not people. It's kids or 'YOUNG ADULTS' that have nothing better to do. They are probably redneck types without girls to keep them occupied. Good job really. Don't want them adding to the genome....

Most normal people have common decency - luckily.

When Elizabeth Kubler-Ross was alive (she was a psychologist who is most famous for giving us the 5 stages of grief) she wanted to open her home up to taking care of babies who were born with HIV (this was in the 1980s and babies born with HIV didn't live long at all - thankfully treatments have gotten better and they sometimes live to be adults now) . . .

ANYWAY - regardless of your feelings about HIV in general you have to admit that these babies were not infected by engaging in high risk behaviors and were not a threat to anyone in terms of infecting other people . . .

The locals burnt her house down . . .

I disagree.

There have been older adults which treat me in the same nature that younger ones do, many, to be honest. Age really has nothing to do with alot of people's ignorance.

You'd also be surprissed at the amount of people without common decency.

I agree with that, young adults is a very generalised term, I am a young adult and I know none of my friends nor I would do something like that, although I know of people who sadly find time to do things similar, however it isn't only young adults it branches to their parents as well.

There's a lot of accepting people out there, I've found.
Don't get trapped into thinking everyone is an a**hole because you've experienced a few of them.

I hate it when people pick on other people for being different; they weren't even using the pool anyway, and it's a public pool, so anyone in the public could use it. It's kind of stupid anyway to throw trash at them when they are going to have to clean the pool up, and because they are making fun of them for their difference. I mean, it's kind of like throwing trash at people with asthma; I have friends and have known people with asthma, and they live almost normally. It's the same with xeroderma pigmetism or any other type of disorder. It's kind of like back in WWII when the Nazis identified people who were 'superior' to everyone else as Aryan; even though it's not as brutal as the Nazis, they're kind of drawing to that point: That people with no disorders are 'superior' and people who have them (or are simply different) are inferior.

I think it is a group culture thing. When one person starts insulting another, everyone joins in with that one person b/c they don't want to appear different.

One time when I got verbally abused, one of the guys who did it came to me later and apoligized for it. I think it has to do more with some obscure social rule rather than "a great deal of people are rotten a-holes"

Not that it makes it hurt less. . .
