I read somewhere that with behavioral therapy, aspies of above-average intelligence could easily learn to communicate and socialize the way neurotypical persons do.

Do you personally know of any success stories?

I don't.

It depends on what you mean by success. I fooled myself into thinking I was an odd/smart NT. Of course, I didn't know about AS then. 8( Every once in a while, people will say "it figures", or something similar that makes me realize they have probably noticed differences even I forgot about. I will never be a good salesperson, and likely never considered a good manager.

I am able to exist in an NT world largely unrecognized for up to 12 hours at a time, longer than that and the aspie traits start showing through...

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

Then again it also helps that I live in NJ (people in the greater NYC area don't spontaneously approach you without something important or relevant to whatever situation you are in to say), and I go to a tech school (higher incidence of aspies than otherwise)... I don't need to adapt as much as I would otherwise have to...

But then if they were acting like NT's how someone know if they were Aspies?

Since people are speaking about how many hours they last pretending to be NT, I would like to take notes and calculate how much time it takes.

I could try talking about things. What should I talk about as a NT imposter and being female?

Hmmm… ‘Success story’?

I’m very successful at ‘fitting-in’, and very successful at hiding my ‘label’. I may have a shorter distance to bridge than some. I can communicate / socialize.

Success for me is feeling relaxed, content and in harmony with what I like to do, which is not ‘socializing to fit-in, or for fun’. I prefer a quiet corner to write, away from the crowd, perhaps alone in the garden with a pair of snipers while admiring the weeds, that’s the real me…..

Nobody likes the ‘weeds’. They don’t ‘fit-in’, though I have noticed that weeds are very tenacious, and have a beauty of their own…

So I guess I’m a success story. I can socialize if need be, fit in, but frankly, it is not very rewarding… I prefer a lot of alone time. You know, a chance to forget to shower, don’t bother to shave, blah, blah, blah.

Well, I do like my quasi-social life here, and my chaotic family household….

It is not easy, but I try to be a less depressed ‘tenacious confident weed’.

Depends what you mean by success. I am 50 and just diagnosed. I have a job that I like and have survived for around 6 years, people do see me as somewhat strange, but value my ‘outside the box/square’ inputs; I have been married for 26 years – luckily my wife accepts my ways. For 50 years – I thought I was insane

‘Easily learn to communicate’ – not a hope – but it is possible, but it is very much a one way street – (bit like being in France – you better learn to speak French ).

‘Socialise’ after 50 years I still cannot socialise (sorry cannot stand the ‘z’ spelling) – I have leant to say the ‘right script’ for short periods; I just do not try for anymore than 5-15 minutes.

I have leant to exist (somewhat successfully) in an NT world (before I knew about AS AND NT) – it is not easy (but at least I now know why!).

‘Easily learn to communicate and socialise’ not a hope – but for some it is possible to learn live within the dominant culture.

Actually that is what the doctor said about me when I got diagnosed and yes I can at times socialise like an NT very easily sometimes it just comes to me.

A lot of aspies (take for instance Bram Cohen) can manage to live sucsessfully in the NT society. It needs a hell of a lot of practice though...

There are courses one can take to learn social skills. Many of these are targeted at people with AS or HFA. I'm capable of covering up my syndrome pretty good, but after people have talked to me for a while, they realise that I'm not exactly normal.

I have always got by being 'the odd one' amongst the people I know, some of my traits are quite mild, but I have a lot of them, not sure how the scratching thing is going to come across, yet.
