Bill Gates has AS, right?

I went to a doctor's office on Tuesday. I found a magazine with Bill Gates on the front cover, and the article was about Bill Gates and Microsoft's upcoming release of XBOX 360. They cracked jokes about him.

The magazine states that when they talked to Gates, they said that he was not the "stiff, unsmiling mandroid that he normally is...who's voice sounds as though it is still changing even though he is 49."

This is an insult to me. They shouldn't say that about an aspie, if he is one.

Well, that's certainly the rumor. I've never seen anything that confirms it. The mainstream press often says stuff like "unconfirmed Asperger's" or "has traits similiar to Asperger's" when discussing Gates and AS.

If its true that he is unsmiling most of the time and his voice sounds unchanged, why would the statement offend you? I'm seriously confused. The word "mandroid" maybe?

If you'd like, perhaps you could write a letter to the editor and educate him/her on AS.

It's a sad fact that people will always feel jealous of success.

Even though they met him, they had to criticise

I get this crap all the time from people. People call me ret*d. (although I don't seem like it at all. don't act like it, dont look like it, etc.)

I can understand why being called ret*d would be offensive when one is not ret*d.

But why would being called unsmiling and young voiced be offensive if one is generally unsmiling and young voiced?

They don't have to make it sound like they're making fun of it.

I don't want this to be taken the wrong way, but I think you should have a sense of humour about AS, EvilWalks. The magazine wasn't ridiculing of AS, they are making fun (not in a mean way) of Bill Gates. My friends and family will laugh and tease me (just a little bit) when I do something particularly Aspie-ish. When I say make fun of or laugh at, I don't mean bully. I mean playfully tease. But out of all the people I know, I make fun of AS and my AS qualities the most. It's healthy to be able to laugh about it.

I personally ALWAYS take the micky out of Gates. But then again, I have fair cause to, having had to re-install my computer 23 bloody times.

I don't think what was said about Bill Gates is any worse than what I read in magazines about other people all the time. It sucks, but that's life.

Besides, why should he care, he's more successful that any of those writers will ever be, if I was him I'd laugh in their faces.

Bee Bee, I certainly do get offended if people such as shop assistants talk to me as if I'm ret*d or roll their eyes or similar. This is because I'm not ret*d - that is the whole point. :x

So I can see where Evilwalks would get upset about people treating him that way. It is because they are making unfounded assumptions and acting on them to treat us less favourably than other people. :x

That said, I don't know if Bill Gates has Aspergers or not so I don't get offended if people make some jokes about him. 8)

But aspies or not, the media often says these sorts of things about other people that aren't true.

personally, I don't care for Bill G's software, so I crack jokes all the time on it. The guy seems like a good person at heart, and the AS jokes don't bother me so much. Whenever I explain aspergers to people, I always reference bill gates anyway, and it immediately changes their opinion. Bill G= money to most people, so if you've got AS and you compare yourself to him, most no NTs longer see AS as a detriment, but as an asset.

I think a lot of people (at least my age and younger) have that gut impulse anytime they see someone who's neurologically different to guess they're ret*d. I don't think that'll change untill something like AS is so deeply embedded into common-knowledge pop psychology that even the most sheltered yuppy bubble-kid can hear about it between trips to Pacific Sunwear or Abercrombie and episodes of the latest pop star reality TV dramas. They can't get it right and untill and understanding is straight up spoon-fed to em I doubt they'll ever care enough about it.
