Yes, absolutely. When my parents first told me I had AS I felt quite upset and ashamed about that. When I started looking AS/autism up on the Internet a year later, I started to feel more comfortable and proud in identifying myself as someone on the autistic spectrum. It was the writing and attitudes of other autistic people that allowed me to accept my AS.

DX'ed with HFA as a child. However this was in 1987 and I am certain had I been DX'ed a few years later I would have been DX'ed with AS instead.

I was shocked when I found out I fit the diagnostic criteria at first.

I think it's helping us get together and stuff.

But there was already the beginnings of such a thing being done through writing to each other in snailmail letters and newsletters and getting together at conferences and so forth, before the Internet got so popular.
