Heightened Senses
Ive read before that Aspies are commonly sensitive to light and glare, which definitely applies to me and I hate driving at night because of it. But what about other senses?
I find that I have an excellent sense of smell(When my sinuses aren't acting up and clogging my nose), far better than I wish it would be. Even tonight at my Uncle's house, a dog had peed in the room and for some reason no one else could smell it, and I could from across the room. Ive also noticed on occasions that I can literally smell Ants in large quantities, My friends think I'm crazy when I mentioned it one time and insisted that Ant's don't have a smell, but on multiple occasions Ive walked into a room and smelled them before I saw them, looked up and sure enough a trail of ants was going into our cabinet. Ever squish one on your finger? It makes the same smell on your finger but more potent. I also tend to have a really bad gag reflex when I smell bad smells, and have been known to puke from the slightest whiff of something foul, I usually can fight it but sometimes I can't keep it down.
As far as Taste goes, I have a similarly bad gag reflex and its caused me to have a very limited list of foods I like and to be a generally picky eater. I hate Thanksgiving because of it because I dislike Turkey and Ham, and can't stand most of the other stuff that is served. This year all I ate was salad(Consisting of just Lettuce with Italian dressing) and bread.
Ive always been capable of hearing those dog whistles that are supposed to be above the human hearing spectrum, and they're quite annoying.
And when it comes to touch, there are many sensations that I just don't like, such as anything slimy or hot. I took a job at Denny's as a dishwasher once, lasted 3 hours before walking out after having to deal with digging through food off plates and liquid from cups left unfinished to get to silverware in the bottom of the bus bins. Every once in a while when I'm showering the water feels hotter on my hands than it does on my body, and I'm not sure what sets that off. I have a very low threshold for pain as well.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone else here?
Have you ever CHECKED that the whistle was silent? I bought a "silent dog whistle". The package SPECIFICALLY said SILENT! Yet if I blow it it is LOUD and sounds like a normal whistle. It IS adjustable, so I adjusted it to one end, LOUD! The other end, LOUD! And many in between, LOUD! The ONLY way I got it to be silent was by removing the slide completely.(logically, it wouldn't have any noise other than air)
I have been reluctant to see if they could hear it because HOW could I ask without sounding like an idiot, etc...?
BTW I have many of the sensory problems you do.
