This may sound a bit mad, But listening to Bob Marley in particular and other reggae music seriously relaxes me and stops me from stimming at all.

Listening to electronic punk and other high tempo music does the complete opposite, and can make me stim far more.

That is rather mad. I can't stand reggae at all. "Smooth jazz" makes me angry--it isn't music. It's a disgrace to the art form of jazz (I play the saxophone; perhaps this explains my strong visceral response).

I find that old blues, classical, and rather modern quirky electronic calm me the most. But, according to my EEG, nothing works. Brain scans are fantastic :D

New Age music relaxes me. I like to put it on and take a nap.

I understand people's frustrations with smooth jazz, however, it IS music, and damn good at that. Especially Wayman Tisdale. Not only a great basketball player, but a great bassist as well.

Oh, Steve Roach helps so much.

Beautiful music. I highly recommend him to people that need a calming, creative boost.

LOL! actually most music causes me to stim more. The only thing that stops it is Classical Music.

When I'm singing in my choir, I have to concentrate on not rocking when I sing. During rehersals I rock badly.

I went to an R&B concert, and I was in the front row. And I was rocking in order to deal with the really loud noise.

And I watched the drummer, and saw she was staring straight at me.

And I realized she was drumming the same rate I was rocking.

So I changed my rate of rocking.

And she changed her rate of drumming.

She was using me as a metronome.

 :)

Interesting.

Thursday night the organ was at 10, the monsignor wanted it that loud. I asked the organist to lower it and he did, but when we were rehearsing a song, it was raised again. I thought I was going to have a meltdown. We were standing right under the pipes. No one else seemed bothered by the loudness of this. I started rocking with my ears covered. I'm sure they all thought I was losing it.

I'll echo what others have said; music in general tends to cause me to stim more; in fact, I typically use music as a part of my stimming routine (rocking).

What music might reduce my stimming? Music I hate; music that annoys and grates on my nerves. But, in all honesty, I'd rather just stim.

I find it strange that several have mentioned classical as anti-stim music. Like (and perhaps because of) Alexander DeLarge, one of my favorite classical stimming pieces is Beethoven's 9th. There is music to stir the soul. And a lot of Mozart has a similar effect on me; I love his Requiem. In fact, I feel like testing the limits of my stereo right about now with it...

Good fortune,

- Icarus thinks music is the best drug...

I live with the music so it also often resulting in more stimming. It, however, helps me concentrate my attention better which removes alot of the anxiety.

This is a strange question - but yes, when it comes to this, there is music that makes me pace like crazy (usually music with a strong beat, like techno or bands like Modern Talking and Abba) and music that elicits no such response, though I will still listen to it while walking (usually classic, art rock or certain types of New Age music that I like). I enjoy listening to both, and both help get my mind working, only in different ways. The first makes my thoughts race and pile up on top of each other, and can get me caught up in them, to a point of almost losing awareness of my surroundings; it also makes me fantasize much more intensely. The second, on the contrary, makes me relaxed and thoughtful, though it is usually far more "colorful" and emotionally intense. It helps me come up with new ideas, too, but in a more serene manner, without losing myself in my own thinking.
