I was talking to my boss assistant of housekeeping about the incident that happened the night before and I was telling him every time I seem to try harder, I just get worse because I am more literal and more concrete and I screw up even more and he told me when people say they are trying harder, they don't do their job right or don't do it at all when they're told to do it so if he told me to empty out the trash cans and I say I'll try harder, I don't empty them instead. WTF.

Why would people say they will try harder next time and mean they won't do it at all? :?

The whole time I have been saying I will try harder and kept trying harder and actually meant it while others do it but don't try at all. I wonder if I have been misunderstood the whole time when I'd say it.

Maybe "Trying Harder" is a figure of speech?

Just like "Stop that teasing" is and "sleeping together."

I'm a little confused by what you wrote.

When I say "I will try harder", I mean it.

Was he saying you did something wrong?

I was telling him when I first came to the job, I wasn't told everything like where every single thing is and it bugs me when people keep acting like I should know and it makes me feel dumb and my boss assistant told me I was supposed to figure the rest out by myself and I'm very smart so I should know. Like when you're new to a job, you aren't you taught how to escape in case there is a fire or get told what you're supposed to do when there is a fire because you're already supposed to know what you're supposed to do in case there was a fire. He told me I have to connect the dots and read between the lines to figure out what to do at my job and I told him I keep trying and every time I try harder to be a better worker, I just get worse and he told me when people say they will try harder, they usually don't try at all or don't even do it.

OK.

I think he was saying that MOST people don't mean it. But you DO mean it, right?

Anyway, if you know that when you try harder, you get worse, then DON'T try harder. Maybe you should relax a little, step back, and watch. It's just an idea.

Most people say they will try harder just to get the boss to shut up and go away. Bosses know this, they were non-bosses at some point. They still say try harder (or some such) to push the inevitable slackers into doing what they're paid for. Unfortunately, they have to say it to everyone to be legally fair to the slackers.

I wouldn't be a boss for love or money. Do your best, ask questions of your coworkers and keep the job search going in case things don't work out.

I don't understand why your boss would say that but I understand where you're coming from. Just show your boss that your productivity increases after you said you'll work harder and he/she will see you really mean it.

I have a different job Richard. I moved to Portland, did you know that? So of of course I quit my job back in Montana. At this new job, we leave our uniforms at work and we change into our uniforms when we get to work and we change out of them when our shift ends. All the compartments in the hotel do it. I wonder if other hotels downtown do the same.

And I wasn't talking about being but talked in this thread, I was talking about something else that happened. I have it in myspace blog and I posted about it on I2 in the b***h About It board. Then I had a talk with the assistant boss about the incident.
